Likud’s Assulin: Opportunist or Apostate?

Posted by Ellen W. Horowitz for JewishIsrael

[I thought this post would interest the visitors to Shilohmusings, because I had posted on this subject here last November. And then Batya posted a response here. This updated information is disturbing]

It’s hard to know what truly motivates a young Israeli politician to embrace a Jesus cult, but on the eve of Shavout - a festival which marks our spiritual redemption from the bondage of idolatry and immorality – Likud’s Sagiv Assulin has chosen to play with a strange fire which threatens to consume the Jewish State.

Assulin has recklessly thrown his support and faith behind the messianic Christian Ephraimite movement and he has embraced the theology and promoted the agenda of Joel Bell – a notorious evangelical missionary leader, who sits on the Board of Governors of World Likud. Assulin admits to having had Joel and Pamela Bell manage his political campaign and raise funds for him through the messianic movement.

And this Shavout , Joel Bell’s World Biblical Zionist organization has a “gigantic homecoming celebration” planned to WELCOME HOME EPHRAIM! - Complete with “an official homecoming welcome from a government official who will speak to the returning pilgrims and welcome them here”.

How entrenched and influential are evangelizing Christians in the Israeli government?

Assulin's letter, videos and a disturbing money trail can be explored at JewishIsrael

I have personally met Joel Bell. He is a very charismatic and outspoken supporter of YESHA. In fact when I met him, he and his wife were in fact living in YESHA. He spoke nothing of Christianity. I can well imagine Sagiv Assulin, a young and new Knesset member being impressed with Joel Bell. Maybe Assulin doesn't know of the alligations of which you speak. But I have heard these alligations several times from several different sources. And Joel Bell isn't the only non-Jewish YESHA supporter you will find in Israel at pro YESHA gatherings.

First of all, these are not allegations. If you go to the referring links you will see that it is Sagiv Assulin who speaks of "Yeshua" and writes in messianic jargon and it Sagiv who has openly and knowingly encouraged the messianic ephramite cult under the guidance of Joel Bell. Sagiv is hardly naive as he has been lecturing and touring at messianic events for quite a while now.

Please learn how to separate moral, financial and political support of YESHA from Christian missionary attempts to undermine the Jewish character of Israel, and gain a foothold here.

It is Joel Bell who has called upon messianic Christians to move en masse to Israel , "buy land in Israel” and lay claim to their “right to own a home” in the Land of Israel, because he believes Gentiles “have been grafted in to the commonwealth of Israel through Melchizedek - Yehoshua HaMashiach (Jesus)”. Israel is, therefore, their “eternal inheritance” which they will share with their “brother Judah” (religious Jews).

This presents the Jewish people with a clear spiritual threat to everything we stand for and live for.

There are clearly people who are in this country and who spout "Christian Zionist" rhetoric and even serve in the army but who will tell you that "Days are coming when the Jewish people will be forced to realize that Yeshua is the only solution to all our troubles."

Anonymous, if you are a Jew and you say the Shema, then these activities should surely cause you distress.

Ellen already set you straight. However, this would be a good time to remind everyone how, prior to Islam's use of Taqqiyah to mislead the infidels, christian apostle Paul had already introduced the idea of lying to win others to Christianity's position:

"And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;

To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.

To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some."
- 1 Corinthians 9:20-22

You, sir or madam "Anonymous", are what's commonly known as a tool, in this case the Bell's tool. Whether of the willing or unwilling tool variety remains to be seen. But the rest of us are more the wiser from experience and from dealing with the facts.

Looking for a picture of him to remind myself who he is, I found out that last year, Reuven Prager is also involved somehow: http://www.hearoisrael.org/Restoration_of_the_Kingdom.html

Reuven Prager does indeed associate with the Ephramite and other messianic groups. But he's a bit hard to figure out - I mean even a "Levite in service" has gotta make a buck, right? There's an interesting exchange at

That's the chief goal of all Messianic Jewish/Christian Zionist groups--to get a foothold in Israel.

There's been an increase in messianic programming on Christian TV stations, which rake in billions, from the downright laughable like Perry Stone to the downright dangerous Jewish Voice International run by Jonathan Bernis. Bernis once had a guest on who told viewers that denying the gospel to Jews is anti-Semitic.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to learn that a large part of that money gets into the hands of messianic friendly politicians. Also, many evangelicals are pressuring rabbis whom they work with to convert to Christianity. A prime example are the Christian members of International Fellowship of Christians and Jews.

It seems like a good organization which supports good causes--helping hungry Jews in Israel and Russia, helping Russian Jews make aliyah. I've been moved watching as Rabbi Eckstein breaks down while visiting a Holocaust survivor who is going hungry.

He knows working with Christians is helpful to these suffering people yet there is increasing pressure for evangelicals to pressure Eckstein, an Orthodox rabbi, into converting.

The long and short of it is that Christians are shelling out big money in an effort to convert Jews and get a foot in Israel's door for further missionary activity.

Politicians are politicians. There are good ones and snakes, who will sell their country out for a campaign contribution.

Just consider these messianic groups as extreme lobbyists.

Keli Ata,

Do you have any documentation about the following:

"Also, many evangelicals are pressuring rabbis whom they work with to convert to Christianity. A prime example are the Christian members of International Fellowship of Christians and Jews."

I would certainly be interested in exploring this issue.
