Corona, COVID-19 Safe "Visits," Check Out Some Blogs

Take advantage of being home more for entertaining yourself on your phone, computer or tablet to read some blog posts. The blogs I follow are the independent ones, not those supplementing op-eds on the online version of various newspapers. Bloggers like myself writer our own material and mostly use our own photographs and graphics. We're not in danger of being "pulled" by antagonistic editors or in competition for prominence for a good spot to attract readers.

A fellow blogger made this graphic for me when I hosted
the 89th Havel Havelim, Jewish-Israeli Blog Round-Up
Some blogs are very personal, while others follow the news. There are food blogs, frugal blogs, book/literary blogs, photo blogs, religious blogs, and some have evolved into what can be best described as "internet magazines."

Years ago, there were frequent, often weekly, blog carnivals aka "roundups" in which the host offered a selection of links to blog posts from many other blogs. And every once in awhile I return to that genre. This is one of those occasions.

As is my custom, I'm just listing the blog post titles for you to click. Remember, I'm not responsible for the content of any blog post other than my own. If you have anything to say about the various blog posts, comment on the individual blog. And if there are any blogs you recommend, please let me know in the comments here, thanks.

Enjoy!

First Blog "Carnival," Roundup of 2020, Tevet 5780

Winter in the Holyland, when a "nice day" means gentle rain, because if we don't get enough rainfall in the winter, we'll suffer dangerous drought throughout the following year and beyond.

Gd willing, I'll provide you with lots of interesting and varied reading material from Jewish and Israeli blogs. Of course, I'm only responsible for my own blog posts, not the opinions of others. And I do try to provide a variety of blogs and articles.

Make yourself comfortable with hot coffee or a bowl of soup, or read while traveling in bus or train or plane. I'm always interested in meeting new blogs, so if you have any to suggest, please let me know in the comments. You're also invited to give your opinions concerning which posts or blogs your enjoyed the most.

All I will do is list the titles, and hope that you feel tempted to click and read. Most bloggers are happy to read your comments. We don't like to feel we're blogging to an empty cloud of nothingness. Enjoy, and please tell me what you think.

What's New in The Jewish Blog World? 1st Roundup of 5780

Once upon a time there was a weekly Jewish Blog Carnival, Havel Havelim, which featured the latest blog posts from a great variety of Jewish and Israeli blogs. It was hosted by the various bloggers and had a nice international following. If you click on these old HH's and then check out the posts, you'll discover that many of the blogs have been discontinued. Some are still online, but others can't be found at all. My blogs are among the very few old time blogs still being updated, though not daily. Until a few months ago, I blogged on both blogs daily even when it required writing in advance and having the post go up automatically on a later day. But as of late I've become an occasional blogger. Sometimes I think I've said it all, just too many times.

One of the great bonuses of blogging way back when was the community we established. Even though we were in different cities and countries, we became friends. And in some cases our friendships escaped the "confines" of the internet. Yes, quite a few of us have met in person.

According to Oscar Wilde:
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.
I'm amused and saddened by the fact that all sorts of mainstream journalism, newspapers, news sites etc, have convinced people to "blog" for them. Even I have arrangements with a few, but my condition is always that I can post from my blogs, including the link. All of this free writing has made it much more difficult for people to earn a living as freelance writers.

Back to what I call "independent blogs," there's still blogging going on. And now I occasionally post a blog "carnival" or "roundup" of blog posts. To spark curiosity, I just give a list of titles in no particular order, not mentioning the names of the blogs. Click, read, comment and share. Also, if you have any blogs to recommend, please let me know in the comments. I'd also like to know which blog post you enjoy the most. Of course, I'm not responsible for any opinions in the posts, besides what I've written of course.

Now, it's time to enjoy.

Forecast is for scorching hot weather today, so get comfortable and stay in the shade, indoors or out.

There's always something to read on the internet. No, not the news, just blogs, Jewish/Israeli ones. They're independent, unique, quirky. If you have any for me to add to my blog rolls, please let me know in the comments here. You can read them at home, breaks at work, eating or lazing by the pool, on your computer, phone, tablet and probably even a smart television, so relax and enjoy this selection of of recommended blog posts.

As is my practice, I'm just going to list titles of articles aka blog posts to whet your curiosity. Enjoy, comment and share.  I'd love your opinions, so don't be shy. Just a reminder, I'm not responsible for the content of the individual articles.

Jewish Israeli Blog Roundup Sivan, 5779, June, 2019

Old picture of me
I talk, not only blog
There are lots of people still blogging. I just wonder how many people actually still read blogs. Do you? Obviously "yes," or you wouldn't be reading this. But who comments? Who shares posts around to others? If you have any blogs to recommend, please do so in the comments, thanks.

The format I use for these roundups is just to list a bunch of blog post titles, embedded, so all you have to do is "click." Please tell me which you like or don't like. I'm only responsible for my own blog posts. Contents that I didn't write are the responsibility of the writer.

I also suggest reading other posts in the included blogs.

Wonderful Aliyah Story, "From Big Whine to Big Grapes"

We bloggers do consider ourselves writers and journalists, but very few of us take the giant step into publishing actual books. Ruti (Mizrachi) Eastman has taken that great daring leap and published "From Big Whine to Big Grapes" not that long ago. It's a collection of blog posts supplemented by essays specially written for this book. Ruti blogs on two blogs, Ki Yachol Nuchal! and  Never Ruthless.

Ruti writes a lot about her and her family's aliyah, move to Israel. They came from the United States, and she's not shy about admitting that without the assistance of Nefesh B'Nefesh, they never could have afforded to make the move. At no point does Ruti ever complain. Ruti only sees the good. And good things do happen to the Eastman family, whether it's an amazingly helpful clerk, a ride in the middle of no-place to where they need to go or finding someone they know to lend them cash when the only nearby ATM is empty.

I have no doubt that one of the reasons that people are so nice to Ruti is that she greets them with a smile and is so friendly and upbeat. We do make our own luck. Ruti doesn't go into details, but she does mention that she and her husband chose to be Jewish. Yes, they are converts, and that whole story would no doubt make a very compelling book.

Because Ruti divided "From Big Whine to Big Grapes" into chapters of essays that are connected by content, there isn't a clear chronology to the narrative. It jumps around, which is both good and bad. For the reviewer, like myself, who needs to finish reading the entire book as quickly as possible, it got confusing at first. After reading a couple of chapters, I "got the rhythm." But I think that most readers will, davka, enjoy it, since you'll have the chance to savor various topics and choose what you're interested in, even skipping around the book and rereading when necessary. I'm sure that those dreaming of aliyah or actually planning it for real will really love "From Big Whine to Big Grapes." You can get some very good advice from reading it. And it's also a great book to give friends and relatives of olim, to make them feel better concerning the new lives chosen by their loved ones.  And even though my husband and I made aliyah decades before the Eastmans, I really enjoyed reading "From Big Whine to Big Grapes." Some things never change and others have changed enormously.

Those who claim that aliyah is too hard, frequently have money complaints. The Eastmans seem to to have made their Israeli life suit their finances and not attempt to reproduce their American life in Israel on an insufficient budget. They rent an apartment unit in a house and don't have a car. They are happy to be here in Israel and consider the "sacrifices" a good trade-off. The relations with the Hebrew-speaking landlords and hitchhiking adventures make great reading.

Ruti is still struggling to master the Hebrew language, which adds more humor to life here in Israel. Advice to potential olim, immigrants to Israel from Ruti, which I agree with completely, is to learn as much Hebrew as you can before you make aliyah.

You can purchase "From Big Whine to Big Grapes" from Amazon, Lulu, Book Depository or here in Israel, email rutimizrachi@gmail.com directly. Ruti has revealed that there's another book in the works, so stay tuned... I can't wait to read it.

I must confess that Ruti and I are friends. We have a lot of mutual friends, and we sometimes meet at IFL football games. But at the games we cheer for different teams. My son used to tackle her son, but now my son's opponent is Ruti's husband; they are both coaches. We both root for a fair and safe game, one without injured players. We want to see them play like "mensches."

Ruti wants to "coach" me into writing a book (or books) from the material in my blogs. What do you think?

Post- Passover Blog Round Up

Since many Jewish and Israeli bloggers have woken from their Passover hibernation, there are some interesting blog posts out there in the cyber world of Jewish blogging. Visit, enjoy, comment and share.

There's no real order to this, and I'm just posting blog post titles, without indicating which blogs they come from. And I didn't even count how many posts there are. Enjoy...

Whoever says that blogging is a dead art/sport/social media format is 100% wrong. The only thing that has gotten weaker is the feeling of community we once had. That's a shame, and that's why I continue with these periodic roundups.

PS I'm always interested in meeting new blogs, so if you have any to recommend, please let me know in the comments, thanks.

What's New in The Blogging World

OK, maybe I should really title this "What's New in The Jewish/Israeli Blogging World"

Periodically I like to post a roundup of blog posts from all over the Jewish/Israeli blog world, and today's the day. If you'd like to recommend more blogs that fit the bill, then please comment with the links. And as usual, I'll be listing blog post titles, which I hope will whet your appetite to read them. Comment and share, of course. The order isn't a ranking, just arbitrary.

Enjoy! Please remember that the material and opinion in the posts written by others are not mine. I don't take responsibility for their mistakes or what they've written. Please let them know what you think, thanks.

Havel Havelim Jewish Blog Carnival

It's time again to give everyone a chance to see what's new, what's being posted by Jewish bloggers here in Israel and abroad. Yes, it's time for Havel Havelim and as has been my custom of late, I'm only including eighteen blog posts.

Of the 18 חי Chai, Life, some will be about Judaism, some politics, Torah and kosher food. Yes, so consider this also a Kosher Cooking Carnival, which used to be a separate blog carnival. I suggest trying to check out all links, comment and share, thanks. We have Facebook pages for both, HH and KCC. And since my blog roll on A Jewish Grandmother was somehow swallowed up by blogger, I've lost a lot the blogs I used to follow and use for KCC, so I'd appreciate suggestions, thanks.

Please remember that these posts have been written by many others, besides those from my blogs, and I'm not responsible for the content.

Last Havel Havelim of 5776

Yes, it's almost Rosh Hashanah, and we can count the hours left in the Jewish Year of 5776. In well under one hundred 100 hours it will be 5777.

I'd like to celebrate it by posting a roundup of Jewish and Israeli blog posts from various blogs. And as has been my custom, I will limit the number to eighteen 18 חי Chai, Life. I will only show titles and hope they will tempt you to read the posts. And since bloggers love to hear/read your opinions, then it would be nice to comment and share, too, thanks.

We have a facebook page you can join. That's where I post news about Havel Havelim.

And just to make things clear, this is a roundup of posts by various bloggers of a variety of opinions. This is not a list of my recent posts. The opinions are the opinions of the various bloggers, not my personal opinions. Some I agree with and can identify with, and others aren't mine at all. Here they are; I hope you enjoy reading them:

The Best 18 for Havel Havelim! Blog Roundup, Av 5776

I haven't posted a Havel Havelim, international Jewish/Israeli blog posts for quite a while.

Since I'm doing this rather spontaneously, I haven't requested that anyone send in posts, so please don't be offended if I've left your blog out*. As is my custom, I'm only listing titles, a good reason to choose a catchy one, which Gd willing will bring people to read blogs that are new to them. We bloggers enjoy getting comments and reading your reactions, so please comment on the posts included. Of course, please share this Havel Havelim and any of the posts you like. HH has a facebook page, and I can be reached at shilohmuse@gmail.com.  Enjoy!

*I chose these posts for no specific reason, no theme at all. Some are blogs on my blogroll, and others are from other blogs' blogrolls. It's getting harder to find a blog that promotes other blogs with blogrolls, which saddens me. Once we bloggers felt like a community and promoted each other. I guess that means that today most bloggers consider themselves as disconnected from other bloggers, and yet, at the same time  they wonder why so few people read and comment on their blogs. Well, if you want people to read yours, you should read and comment on other blogs. There was a time when there were all sorts of blog carnivals like this one, Havel Havelim. I made quite a few friends from blogging. Today we're mostly in touch on facebook, which isn't blogging at all. Sigh... rant...

Havel Havelim: חי 18 Jewish/Israeli Blog Posts

There are so many really good blog posts out there to read, so I figured that today, quite a while since I had last put together a Havel Havelim, round-up of Jewish/Israeli Blog Posts, that today would be the day!

And as as been my practice of late, ever since I found myself as the last surviving/willing HH host, I will just list eighteen 18 חי linked titles of blog posts for your reading pleasure. Bloggers, an intriguing title attracts more readers! Sometimes I callout on facebook (please, join our HH fb group) for suggestions, but this morning, I'll choose them on my own. I hope you don't mind. Of course, if anyone would like to host a Havel Havelim, you're invited. Please let me know, thanks, shilohmuse@gmail.com.

All I ask is that you read/enjoy, comment and share, thanks!

Independence Day Havel Havelim, 5776, 2016

I've decided to share a number of interesting blog posts from various blogs that honor the State of Israel, Soldiers and Terror Victims Memorial Day and Yom HaAtzma'ut, Israel's Independence Day as a very timely Havel Havelim--round-up, blog carnival. IMHO, it's  a very good way to celebrate the Holiday.

Havel Havelim 18 Post Blog Roundup

Since for the past I don't know I'm the only one hosting Havel Havelim, the long running (or limping) international Jewish blog roundup, I've changed it from an unlimited number of posts to only eighteen, 18. About an hour ago, I announced on facebook that I'm accepting links from bloggers (or blog readers.) A couple have arrived in the (email) post, and they will be featured along with some of mine and some I have found.

Havel Havelim has a facebook page, which you're invited to join. If you'd like to host a roundup like this under the esteemed title "Havel Havelim," please let me know, thanks shilohmuse@gmail.com . I certainly never expected to be the only host. I just don't want to let it die out completely. I think there is still a need and audience for a blog carnival of Jewish and Israeli blog posts. There was a time when we were quite a community and even had large get togethers.  But enough with the past.

Let me know which is your favorite post or two or three, and also let me know which other blogs you like and think should be included. And remember that you don't have to be a blogger to read, comment and share HAVEL HAVELIM!!

I hope that long winded introduction didn't send you scrolling for something else to read.  Let's get on with the show! (I am just listing linked blog post titles to whet the appetite.)
