Hamas/Gaza War Musings #59: Commemorate According to Jewish Calendar, Simchat Torah, Not October 7th

Jewish Calendar, this year, the one that just began on Rosh Hashannah 5786

I follow the Jewish Calendar*. We were brutally and viciously attacked on Simchat Torah, 5784 two years ago, which fell on the 7th of October, 2023.

We must respect and follow our calendar; it's an extremely important part of Judaism. It davka shows/proves our permanent and indisputable connection to the Land of Israel. It gets adjusted to coincide with the seasons of the Land by adding days and months.

That's the exact opposite of the nomadic Muslim calendar in which holidays wander among all the seasons, proving that they have no connection to land. The Muslim calendar is strictly lunar and always only twelve months. That doesn't jive with the solar calendar; it's short a few days, which adds up. It also means that their year number is inaccurate. Their year has fewer days, so every few years, they've added a year. Also if they count ages by their calendar, people are younger than they claim to be. Just think... you don't need to be a mathematician.

While I'm talking about calendars, did you notice that the Jewish one and the Christian one are up to different years? 5786 vs 2025... Yes, Judaism is a lot older than Christianity. And Islam only began in the 7th century, 610. Judaism is much older than both. Neither religion is a contemporary of Judaism, so Abraham, Isaac and Jacob weren't at all involved in those two religions. Those two religions adopted/stole Jewish History; call it identity theft... More food for thought.

*This link is really clear about how the Jewish Calendar gets adjusted to stay connected to seasons, the solar calendar and make sure certain holidays don't end up on certain days of the week.

Pre-Yom Kippur "The 40 Day Challenge" Good All Year

The 40 Day Challenge: Daily Jewish Insights to Prepare for the High Holidays by Mark Wildes is a well written, beautifully presented guide to help us improve our lives not just the forty days before Yom Kippur but all year long.

As I rushed to finish reading The 40 Day Challenge so I could get this book review posted early enough to help market the book in time for Rosh Chodesh Ellul, I realized that the messages/exercises are really for all year long. Teshuva-Repentance and improving our religious observance, between man and Gd or man to man must be done 24/7. Judaism isn't a part-time religion.
Rabbi Mark Wildes is the Founder and Director of Manhattan Jewish Experience (MJE), a highly successful Jewish outreach and educational program that engages and reconnects unaffiliated Jewish men and women in their 20s & 30s with Judaism and the Jewish community. In its 22 years of existence, MJE has successfully reconnected thousands of previously unaffiliated Jewish men and women with Judaism and the Jewish community, hundreds of whom are today living committed Jewish lives and sending their children to Jewish Day Schools. Rabbi Mark also teaches an outreach training seminar at RIETS, Yeshiva University’s rabbinical school, training new leaders for the future.
Forty is a special number in Judaism, and Wildes did a wonderful job in finding forty challenges for us to attempt. When you finish the forty, please don't put the book  away hoping to remember to take it out next Rosh Chodesh Ellul. Just start again from number one.

Each chapter ends with a question to help the reader succeed. The question puts the challenge into simple doable terms. Here's an example from the chapter about "gossip."

It's clear that Wildes doesn't expect us to become perfect overnight. But he does show that we can gradually in small steps.

I highly recommend The 40 Day Challenge as the perfect gift for yourself and others. It's not written in highfalutin fancy language. The 40 Day Challenge has a clear accessible message. All of us can use it to make our lives better. To purchase the book, click here- Kodesh Press.

Corona, COVID-19 Safe "Visits," Check Out Some Blogs

Take advantage of being home more for entertaining yourself on your phone, computer or tablet to read some blog posts. The blogs I follow are the independent ones, not those supplementing op-eds on the online version of various newspapers. Bloggers like myself writer our own material and mostly use our own photographs and graphics. We're not in danger of being "pulled" by antagonistic editors or in competition for prominence for a good spot to attract readers.

A fellow blogger made this graphic for me when I hosted
the 89th Havel Havelim, Jewish-Israeli Blog Round-Up
Some blogs are very personal, while others follow the news. There are food blogs, frugal blogs, book/literary blogs, photo blogs, religious blogs, and some have evolved into what can be best described as "internet magazines."

Years ago, there were frequent, often weekly, blog carnivals aka "roundups" in which the host offered a selection of links to blog posts from many other blogs. And every once in awhile I return to that genre. This is one of those occasions.

As is my custom, I'm just listing the blog post titles for you to click. Remember, I'm not responsible for the content of any blog post other than my own. If you have anything to say about the various blog posts, comment on the individual blog. And if there are any blogs you recommend, please let me know in the comments here, thanks.

Enjoy!

Jewish Israeli Blog Roundup Sivan, 5779, June, 2019

Old picture of me
I talk, not only blog
There are lots of people still blogging. I just wonder how many people actually still read blogs. Do you? Obviously "yes," or you wouldn't be reading this. But who comments? Who shares posts around to others? If you have any blogs to recommend, please do so in the comments, thanks.

The format I use for these roundups is just to list a bunch of blog post titles, embedded, so all you have to do is "click." Please tell me which you like or don't like. I'm only responsible for my own blog posts. Contents that I didn't write are the responsibility of the writer.

I also suggest reading other posts in the included blogs.

Where do You Light Your Chanukiya, Chanuka Menorah?

The light of our Chanukiya, Chanuka Menorah, is supposed to be a sign to the world that we, the small Jewish People, cannot be defeated by big, strong armies. It's not supposed to be a light that physically illuminates. The Light of the Chanukiya, Chanuka Menorah is not to be used for any practical purpose, like reading or navigating and certainly not to light up a room.

We've always set up our chanukiyot on window sills facing the main street. Since our custom has always been that everyone old enough to have some understanding of the mitzvah should light their very own chanukiya, there have been years when both our meter plus window sills were full of chanukiyot.

Nowadays, there are rarely more than just the two of us rattling around this empty nest. Our big family Chanuka celebrations are generally at the kids.

Many of our neighbors light their chanukiyot outside, by their doors or right on the sidewalk. The mitzvah of פרסום הנס pirsum haness, publicizing the miracle, is taken very seriously.

What are your family and community chanukiya-lighting customs?

The Mishkan and Post-Temple Judaism

Yesterday in Matan during the lecture by Yael Leibowitz, in which she described what we'll be learning this year, she mentioned that after the destruction of the Holy Temples, Chazal, our sages had the task of defining a Judaism which could survive in Exile and without a Temple. It had to be "portable."

After close to forty years living in Shiloh, it's no surprise where my mind went. I saw a chiastic structure framing the period between Joshua's leading the Jewish People into the Land of Israel and the Destruction of the Second Holy Temple which preceded the long two thousand 2,000 year Exile into the Diaspora.

Model of Inner Tabernacle, Ancient Shiloh Hakeduma, Tel Shiloh

Main Synagogue in Shiloh, designed after the Biblical Tabernacle

The bridge was the Mishkan, Tabernacle, especially when it rested, stood temporarily in Shiloh for close to four hundred years. Prayer, more specifically communal, consisted of sacrifices and took place in and around the Mishkan. The Mishkan was first constructed according to detailed plans communicated by Gd right after the exodus from Egypt.

The Mishkan was made to be portable, and during the forty years the Jewish People were "in transit" between Egypt and the Holy Land, it could be moved. In the Holy Land, it then "rested" in Shiloh. Besides the stone foundation, it was still constructed of wood, fabric and animal skins. That's why it is so difficult to ascertain exactly where it stood in Shiloh. No stone walls remain, no matter how far deeply the archaeologists dig.

When we were a united tribal nation, the Tabernacle was enough to keep us together, build shared experiences, but with time the Jewish People needed more.

In the Holy Land, first the Mishkan was the center for religious pilgrimages. Later, during the Davidic Dynasty, it was replaced by the Beit Hamikdash, Holy Temple in Jerusalem. And then, after the destruction of the Second Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish People, a new version of Judaism had to be developed. No longer did Gd send specific instructions. It was in the hands of knowledgeable people, the Sanhedrin.

The Sanhedrin developed/decided on a Judaism that has kept us a People for two thousand years. And now, thank Gd, we have returned to our Land. As Jews return from all corners of the world, it's time to erase our differences and build the Third Holy Temple in Jerusalem, Gd willing, speedily in our days...

Have a Wonderful, Healthy, Joyful 5779

Cross-posted on A Jewish Grandmother

For those of you waiting for my annual Fruit Head to greet the New Jewish Year, here he/she is! A few decades ago, during my quarter century, yes, 25 years, as a vegetarian, I adapted our Rosh Hashana table to the reality that nobody in the family wanted to eat a fish head, or even look at one. So, since then I've decorated a fruit, usually an apple, in honor of the New Jewish Year.

I bless you with a year of comfortable companionship. May you never be alone.

The 5779 Fruit Head is joined by a רימון rimon, pomegranate, one of the fruits which has much spiritual significance in Judaism, read 9 Jewish Things About Pomegranates.

One of the principles of Judaism is that Gd is all over, not just in the synagogue, not just when you're praying or remembering Him. Judaism is a "full-time" religion, and we don't need an intermediary to pray to Gd. Gd also sees us all the time, what we do and what we think. We can't hide from Gd.

At the same time, Judaism is divided between the קודש וחול Kodesh v'Chol, the Holy/Gd and Ordinary People/things/everyday. That's why in Judaism it's not considered enough to just pray to Gd, even saying all the words ourselves, it's preferable to pray with a proper minyan, ten men prayer group, with a leader.

Judaism isn't a solitary religion; it's a community. We need other people, other Jews. We need family, even when the family isn't all biologically and legally related. We need the support of other people, and we must help and support in turn. Yes, there is a time when we give and when we receive. That concept is repeated in the book of קהלת Kohelet, Ecclesiastes.

Last week when I led our pre-High Holiday book club discussion on  קהלת Kohelet, Ecclesiastes, I asked if anyone knew why the writer, the son of King David, generally believed to be King Solomon, gave himself the name קהלת Kohelet. We couldn't think of a reason.

Maybe we're supposed to see ourselves as part of a long, complex Jewish History of Jewish People. There are repetitive cycles and lessons to be learned, and that is what King Solomon who is described in the Tanach/Bible as very wise is trying to tell us in קהלת Kohelet, Ecclesiastes. We are a very unique community קהל Kahal from the same linguistic root as קהלת Kohelet.

To survive we need both ordinary people and Gd. Even when things look bad, they are just part of the normal cycle, and we mustn't allow ourselves to wallow in depression. Reach out to others, humans and Gd. Don't be alone.

Random Miracles, Siyate D'Shmaya, Enjoying Life

One aspect of belief in Gd is the faith that things will work out well, and it's not good to obsess over things we can't control.

I wasn't born with that talent, or talents. I wasn't raised in a religious home where people used faith in Gd  as a comfort or reassurance. Gd wasn't part of our reality. There was a lot of negativity.

I'd get overly hysterical about things. Considering that I was raised by parents who blamed me for all sorts of things, it looked rather hopeless for me to ever get over it. But over twenty years I became aware of how damaging this personality flaw is, and I've been working on improving/fixing myself ever since. A friend who suffered my outbursts way back when but stayed my friend throughout loves to tell people how much nicer I've become over the years, decades.

I've learned to see the Siyate D'Shmaya, Hand of Gd in things, learned to see the good and ignore the bad. When I report/complain about the difficulty/inconvenience I'm not living with, as the regional council is ripping up out streets and sidewalks to put in new sidewalks, causes dust and dirt in and out of the house, while at the very same time, we're renovating, getting a new kitchen, which brings the dust and dirt inside the house... I stop my complaint mid-sentence and tell people how lucky I am that these renovations are being done concurrently rather than consecutively, one after another. Such Siyate D'Shmaya, Gd is truly wonderful! What a blessing...

Sometimes the Siyate D'Shmaya comes in smaller, but no less miraculous packages. This morning, for instance, as left the enclosed area of the local swimming pool, I saw a young mother and child getting out of a car. The woman looked around, a bit confused and asked me:
"Where is the synagogue?"
"Noam Yonatan Synagogue?"
"Yes."
"Follow me. It's very near to my house," I replied.
It was very clear to both of us that this was an example of  Siyate D'Shmaya. She had immediate help, and was able to help her without even going out of my way. The timing was perfect.

One thing I've learned is that LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT TO BE. We've all heard about the way of dividing people into those who see a cup half empty versus those who see it as half full.

Over half a century ago as I learned choreography for Modern Dance and performance skills, it included an important lesson:
"If you fall while performing, just get up gracefully, as if it's part of the dance."
This is an extremely necessary life skill. We must make the unexpected, unwanted and unplanned into part of our life, even when it's sad. We shouldn't obsess over everything. We have to just go on. We must also distinguish between inconvenience and tragedy. Look for the humor.

The Optimist appeared in a 1940 edition of The Rotarian:
"Life handed him a lemon,
As Life sometimes will do.
His friends looked on in pity,
Assuming he was through.
They came upon him later,
Reclining in the shade
In calm contentment, drinking
A glass of lemonade."[10]

Where's The International Condemnation of Arab Terrorism?

Just a couple of days ago, a young Jewish father was murdered by an Arab terrorist in Adam, a town north of Jerusalem. But the international media cares for for Arab terrorists. Arab terrorism is constantly being excused by world leaders.

Chalk that up to the persistent antisemitism which prevails in the world. And to be honest, I don't see any chance of stopping it. It doesn't matter what Israel does or how we try to explain things. It's not ignorance that causes people to hate us, it's an intrinsic part of their theology and rationale.

The two dominant religions in the world are Christianity and Islam. Both Christianity and Islam are based on Jewish narratives and texts, and both Christianity and Islam attempt from their earliest days to supplant/replace Judaism. The fact that Jews on the whole refused their gods and theology have angered them to this very day.

Antisemitism is not found among the Buddhists and Hindus, because their theologies have no theological connections to Judaism.

The continued existence of the Jewish People and our successful return to Zion, to the Biblical Land of Israel has increased the anger against us. That is because it is proof that Gd loves us. We are the only true religion.

Who Are the Palestinians?
by Yashiko Sagamori  --  2002 November 25

If you are so sure that "Palestine, the country, goes back
through most of recorded history", I expect you to be able
to answer a few basic questions about that country of "Palestine":

1. When was it founded and by whom?

2. What were its borders?

3. What was its capital?

4. What were its major cities?

5. What constituted the basis of its economy?

6. What was its form of government?

7. Can you name at least one Palestinian leader before Arafat?

8. Was Palestine ever recognized by a country whose existence,
at that time or now, leaves no room for interpretation?

9. What was the [unique] language of the country of Palestine?

10. What was the prevalent religion of the country of Palestine?

11. What was the name of its currency? Choose any date in history
and try and find the approximate exchange rate of the Palestinian
monetary unit against the US dollar, German mark, British pound,
Japanese yen, or Chinese yuan on that date.

12. Have the Palestinians left any artifacts behind?

13. Do you know of a library where one could find a work
of Palestinian literature produced before 1967 CE?

14. And, finally, since there is no such country today,
what caused its demise and when did it occur?

If you are lamenting the "low sinking" of "once proud"
nation, then please tell me, when exactly was that "nation"
proud and what was it so proud of?

And here is the least sarcastic question of all: If the people
you mistakenly call "Palestinians" are anything but generic
Arabs collected from all over - or thrown out of - the Arab
world, if they really have a genuine ethnic identity that gives
them right for self-determination, why did they never try
to become independent until Arabs suffered their devastating
defeat by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War?

I hope you avoid the temptation to trace the modern-day
"Palestinians" to the Biblical Philistines: substituting
etymology for history won´t work here.

The truth should be obvious to everyone who wants to know it.
Arab countries have never abandoned the dream of destroying
Israel; they still cherish it today. Having time and again failed
to achieve their evil goal through military means, they decided
to fight Israel by proxy.
For that purpose, they created a terrorist organization, cynically
called it "the Palestinian people" and installed it in Gaza, Judea,
and Samaria.  How else can you explain the refusal by Jordan
and Egypt to unconditionally accept back the "West Bank"
and Gaza, respectively, in the aftermath of the 1967 war?

The fact is, Arabs populating Gaza, Judea, and Samaria have
much less of a claim to nationhood than the American Indian
tribe that successfully emerged in Connecticut with the purpose
of starting a tax-exempt casino: at least that tribe had a constructive
goal that motivated them.
The so-called "Palestinians" have only one motivation:
the destruction of Israel. In my book that is not sufficient to
consider them a "nation" -- or anything else -- except what they
really are: a terrorist organization that will one day be dismantled.

In fact, there is only one way to achieve piece in the Middle East.
Arab countries must acknowledge and accept their defeat in
their war against Israel and, as the losing side, should pay Israel
reparations for the more than 50 years of devastation they have
visited upon it. The most appropriate form of such reparations
would be the removal of their terrorist organization from the
land of Israel and acceptance of Israel´s ancient sovereignty
over Gaza, Judea, and Samaria.

That will mark the end of the Palestinian people.
What are you saying again was its beginning?

======================================
What happened to the Philistines? by Mr. Cohen
======================================
Some Palestinians claim to be descendants of the Philistines,
an ancient nation that is mentioned in the Bible.  This claim
is very unlikely to be true, because around the year 600 BCE,
King Nebuchadnezzar [king of Babylon] destroyed most of
the Philistines, and the rest were deported to Babylon.

According to the article titled: “Who Were the Philistines?
written by Owen Jarus, which appeared in Live Science
magazine on 2016 July 16:

“The Philistines disappear from written history during the 6th century B.C. when the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II (reign ca. 605 BC – c. 562 BC) conquered the region and destroyed several cities, including Ashkelon [which was their main city].”

======================================
Josephus and the Philistines by Mr. Cohen
======================================
Michael Avioz wrote an essay titled: “The Philistines in Josephus’ Writings”.
In the final paragraph of this essay, which is titled “Conclusion”, he says:

               “Unlike the Egyptians, the
               Philistines no longer existed
             in Josephus’ own life-time.”

Since the famous historian Josephus lived around 2,000 years ago
in the Holy Land [which was then called the land of Judea] this
means that the Philistines were already vanished from the Holy Land
around 2,000 years ago.  Therefore, claims that the Palestinians
are descendants of the Biblical Philistines are very unlikely to be true.

======================================
Where did the Philistines come from? by Mr. Cohen
======================================

The ancient Philistines originated from the
AEGEAN area, according to the World Book
Encyclopedia, volume 15 (letter P), page 382, 2017.

The Aegean Sea is part of Greece.  Therefore,
the Philistines were Greeks. They were NOT
indigenous to the Land of Israel; they were foreign.

======================================
Where did the Philistines live? by Mr. Cohen
======================================

The ancient Philistines lived in what is now
southwestern Israel, according to the World Book
Encyclopedia, volume 15 (letter P), page 382, 2017.

Therefore, if the Palestinians have any claim
to the Land of Israel that is based on the
ancient Philistines, then that claim is limited to
southwest Israel, also known as Gaza.

Four Quotes about Palestine
======================================

***** QUOTE 1: *****

Zuheir Mohsen, a leader of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization),
said this in an interview with Trouw (a Dutch daily newspaper) in March 1977:

“The Palestinian people does not exist.

The creation of a Palestinian state is only a means for continuing
our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. In reality,
today there is no difference between Jordanians, Palestinians,
Syrians and Lebanese. Only for political and tactical reasons
do we speak today about the existence of a Palestinian people,
since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence
of a distinct Palestinian people to oppose Zionism."

***** QUOTE 2: *****

"From the end of the Jewish state in antiquity to the beginning
of British rule, the area now designated by the name Palestine was
not a country and had no frontiers, only administrative boundaries…"

SOURCE:
Professor Bernard Lewis, Commentary Magazine, January 1975

***** QUOTE 3: *****

"There is no such thing as a Palestinian Arab nation...

Palestine is a name the Romans gave to Israel with the express
purpose of infuriating the Jews...

Why should we use the spiteful name meant to humiliate us?

The British chose to call the land they mandated Palestine,
and the Arabs picked it up as their nation's supposed ancient name,
though they couldn't even pronounce it correctly and turned it into
Falastin a fictional entity."

SOURCE: Golda Meir quoted by Sarah Honig,
Jerusalem Post, 25 November 1995

***** QUOTE 4: *****

"Palestine has never existed . . . as an autonomous entity.
There is no language known as Palestinian.
There is no distinct Palestinian culture.
There has never been a land known as Palestine governed by Palestinians.

Palestinians are Arabs, indistinguishable from Jordanians
(another recent invention), Syrians, Lebanese, Iraqis, etc.

Keep in mind that the Arabs control 99.9 percent of the Middle East lands.  Israel represents one-tenth of one percent of the landmass.
But that's too  much for the Arabs.  They want it all.

And that is ultimately what the fighting in Israel is about today . . .
No matter how many land concessions the Israelis make,
it will never be enough."

an Arab-American editor and journalist,

======================================
Why did the Oslo peace treaty fail?
======================================

“[The] Olso [peace treaty] also failed because the Palestinians,
while talking peace in English, continued to build hate
against Israelis in Arabic, in their mosques and textbooks.

And they continued to draw maps of a future
Palestinian state that erased Israel.”
