First Blog "Carnival," Roundup of 2020, Tevet 5780

Winter in the Holyland, when a "nice day" means gentle rain, because if we don't get enough rainfall in the winter, we'll suffer dangerous drought throughout the following year and beyond.

Gd willing, I'll provide you with lots of interesting and varied reading material from Jewish and Israeli blogs. Of course, I'm only responsible for my own blog posts, not the opinions of others. And I do try to provide a variety of blogs and articles.

Make yourself comfortable with hot coffee or a bowl of soup, or read while traveling in bus or train or plane. I'm always interested in meeting new blogs, so if you have any to suggest, please let me know in the comments. You're also invited to give your opinions concerning which posts or blogs your enjoyed the most.

All I will do is list the titles, and hope that you feel tempted to click and read. Most bloggers are happy to read your comments. We don't like to feel we're blogging to an empty cloud of nothingness. Enjoy, and please tell me what you think.

What's New in The Jewish Blog World? 1st Roundup of 5780

Once upon a time there was a weekly Jewish Blog Carnival, Havel Havelim, which featured the latest blog posts from a great variety of Jewish and Israeli blogs. It was hosted by the various bloggers and had a nice international following. If you click on these old HH's and then check out the posts, you'll discover that many of the blogs have been discontinued. Some are still online, but others can't be found at all. My blogs are among the very few old time blogs still being updated, though not daily. Until a few months ago, I blogged on both blogs daily even when it required writing in advance and having the post go up automatically on a later day. But as of late I've become an occasional blogger. Sometimes I think I've said it all, just too many times.

One of the great bonuses of blogging way back when was the community we established. Even though we were in different cities and countries, we became friends. And in some cases our friendships escaped the "confines" of the internet. Yes, quite a few of us have met in person.

According to Oscar Wilde:
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.
I'm amused and saddened by the fact that all sorts of mainstream journalism, newspapers, news sites etc, have convinced people to "blog" for them. Even I have arrangements with a few, but my condition is always that I can post from my blogs, including the link. All of this free writing has made it much more difficult for people to earn a living as freelance writers.

Back to what I call "independent blogs," there's still blogging going on. And now I occasionally post a blog "carnival" or "roundup" of blog posts. To spark curiosity, I just give a list of titles in no particular order, not mentioning the names of the blogs. Click, read, comment and share. Also, if you have any blogs to recommend, please let me know in the comments. I'd also like to know which blog post you enjoy the most. Of course, I'm not responsible for any opinions in the posts, besides what I've written of course.

Now, it's time to enjoy.

Keeping Cool Blog Carnival, Summer 5779, 2019

Forecast is for scorching hot weather today, so get comfortable and stay in the shade, indoors or out.

There's always something to read on the internet. No, not the news, just blogs, Jewish/Israeli ones. They're independent, unique, quirky. If you have any for me to add to my blog rolls, please let me know in the comments here. You can read them at home, breaks at work, eating or lazing by the pool, on your computer, phone, tablet and probably even a smart television, so relax and enjoy this selection of of recommended blog posts.

As is my practice, I'm just going to list titles of articles aka blog posts to whet your curiosity. Enjoy, comment and share.  I'd love your opinions, so don't be shy. Just a reminder, I'm not responsible for the content of the individual articles.

Post- Passover Blog Round Up

Since many Jewish and Israeli bloggers have woken from their Passover hibernation, there are some interesting blog posts out there in the cyber world of Jewish blogging. Visit, enjoy, comment and share.

There's no real order to this, and I'm just posting blog post titles, without indicating which blogs they come from. And I didn't even count how many posts there are. Enjoy...

WHY THIS PESACH WAS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHERS….
Commandments
Pishers' Guide to Jerusalem #28, Machane Yehuda WC, Fright at First Sight

Sewing the Seeds of Love

Whoever says that blogging is a dead art/sport/social media format is 100% wrong. The only thing that has gotten weaker is the feeling of community we once had. That's a shame, and that's why I continue with these periodic roundups.

PS I'm always interested in meeting new blogs, so if you have any to recommend, please let me know in the comments, thanks.

Havel Havelim Jewish Blog Carnival

It's time again to give everyone a chance to see what's new, what's being posted by Jewish bloggers here in Israel and abroad. Yes, it's time for Havel Havelim and as has been my custom of late, I'm only including eighteen blog posts.

Of the 18 חי Chai, Life, some will be about Judaism, some politics, Torah and kosher food. Yes, so consider this also a Kosher Cooking Carnival, which used to be a separate blog carnival. I suggest trying to check out all links, comment and share, thanks. We have Facebook pages for both, HH and KCC. And since my blog roll on A Jewish Grandmother was somehow swallowed up by blogger, I've lost a lot the blogs I used to follow and use for KCC, so I'd appreciate suggestions, thanks.

Please remember that these posts have been written by many others, besides those from my blogs, and I'm not responsible for the content.

Havel Havelim Bamidbar, In The Desert. Wouldn't Dessert be Nicer?

Cross-posted on me-ander

Sure, why not dessert? This is birthday week for me! Actually this year there's only a day between my goyish and Jewish birthdays. It's just a quirk; I don't know why. It's not an age that can be easily divided by 19. Back to the subject at hand.

Havel Havelim is the longest running International Jewish blog carnival. A blog carnival is an internet magazine with blog posts as articles. Many, like HH, float from blog to blog. Havel Havelim is weekly and was begun by Soccer Dad who no longer maintains his blog. In recent years we've (that's Esser Agaroth and yours truly) have been coordinating it as a group effort with the friends and support of other bloggers on our facebook page. A wide variety of bloggers share the responsibilities of hosting, and we hope that you'll read, comment and of course share the carnival and the various blog posts included. Getting to know other blogs is what it's all about.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A BLOGGER TO READ AND SHARE HAVEL HAVELIM!!

I hope you enjoy this week's round-up. Just to make things clear. These are blog posts. I don't know many or possibly most of the authors and I may not even agree with what is written. There's lots of food for thought for sure. Some post links were sent to me, and others I chose. As is my custom, I'm just listing the titles and hope that you check them out. Just click the titles. To submit posts, you can use  blog carnival or email the week's host; information on  our facebook page. If you'd like to host an edition, then contact us on facebook or shilohmuse at gmail dot com or esseragaroth at gmail dot com, thanks.

Bloggers and blog fans, are you disappointed that your blog or blogs or your favorite blogs aren't included in this edition?  Well, there are two simple way to solve that painful dilemma.

  1. Just submit the links either via blog carnival or to the weekly host, which you can discover by following our facebook page. If you're really stuck, then email me shilohmuse at gmail dot com with HH as subject.
  2. Volunteer to host an edition instead of standing on the outside and feeling left-out. More information on  our facebook page. Or email me shilohmuse at gmail dot com with "HH hosting" as subject.

Remember:

  • Havel Havelim is a Jewish blog carnival, so the post must have Jewish or Israeli content.
  • Posts must not promote any other religion.
  • Posts must not question the legitimacy of the State of Israel.
  • Posts must be from the previous week or the time since the previous edition of HH, when during Jewish Holidays we skip a week.
  • Posting time is any time except for Shabbat from Friday to Sunday, depending on the convenience of the host.

I also coordinate the Kosher Cooking Carnival which is a monthly Jewish blog carnival that includes posts about all aspects of kosher food from recipes, customs, halacha-Jewish Law and reviews of kosher restaurants and cookbooks. We also have a facebook page and blog carnival account.

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of jewish-israel blog carnival aka havel havelim using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

New Life for Jewish Israeli Blogging, The New Havel Havelim

I opened up a new account at blog carnival for Havel Havelim.  It has been limping along as of late as a monthly blog carnival.  That's not good.  The type of posts that make Havel Havelim great are topical and timely, so monthly makes it weak, stale and was killing it.  I pledged on our facebook page, or at least to Esser Agaroth that if I can get "ownership" of the blog carnival account, I'd be the default and use their trusty instacarnival*  to post when there is no host.  Since we couldn't get control of that account, I just opened a new one.
Jewish-Israel blog carnival aka Havel Havalim
Submit your posts by clicking here.
and Please add the logo to your blog's sidebar.
And until I receive a new logo for the blog carnival, I'll use this picture:

Here are the posts that had been submitted the past month to Havel Havelim (plus other posts which I've added) which due to circumstances beyond my control wasn't posted:

Self-Sacrifice and You: Lessons from Irena Sendler
"We have met the enemy..."

Another Rabbi of the Exile, Keeping the Jew Down
The Melon Knows Hashem Better Than Many Jews
A Time to Remember the Holy House

Please read, comment and of course share the carnival and share the posts.  Let's get this show back on the road!

That concludes this edition. Submit your blog article to the next edition of jewish-israel blog carnival aka havel ha using our carnival submission form. Past posts and future hosts can be found on our blog carnival index page.

*Blog carnival does all the work for us.  They collect and compile all of the links that have been sent in and send the package aka instacarnival to the host.  All you need to do is edit, which means deleting any spam off-topic posts, add more posts you've found and some pictures from the posts if you want.  Instacarnival comes in two versions, the html code and "regular."  I'll also help "coach" you through the process if needed.  So, please volunteer to host.  Contact me through email or our facebook page, thanks.

Jewish Blog Round Up, Let's Link Up Together

It has been much too long since a Havel Havelim has been posted, so this is rather unofficial.  Yocheved's may have been the last HH. I'm going to include all sorts of posts from various blogs, mostly those I'm familiar with, but as I search, I hope to discover some new ones.  Please share this round-up, comment and also visit and share the various posts.  For Havel Havelim updates, check out our facebook page, thanks.

Enough of an introduction, now to get started giving you a taste of what' s happening in the jblog  (Jewish blogging) world.  Have a Shabbat Shalom u'Mevorach, a peaceful and blessed Shabbat.

The second longest running Jewish Blog Carnival is the monthly Kosher Cooking Carnival, posted on Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of each Jewish Month.  It includes all different aspects of kosher food.

Esser Agaroth's posts are always worth more than  .  Read his latest Forbidden First Fruits.

By checking out the blogroll on Esser Agaroth, I discovered this charming aliyah blog post, Shabbat in Givat Ze'ev with the Ever Family.  And through this blog I found The Curious Jew, which has some amazing posts, Poetic Justice in the Deaths of Avner and Amassa? and Mother's Day: A Painful Day?  for example.

Another great jblogger and inspiring person is Yocheved.  Read her  Friending Disabilities.

My friend Miriam thinks she was had.   Read why. Did we Waste our Votes?

Another realtime f2f blogging friend is Ruti, who has a great post about shoes, sushi and her latest soldier.  (A lot of IFL players are glad that he's now in a different uniform.)

Everyone copes differently with challenges.  Read Crossing the Yarden
The Key to Mountain Biking…..and Dealing with Cancer and Superman Sam

Many of us have changed our lives and taken very different roads to do so.  Here's how one woman started:   My First Real Shavuot .

Shavuot is more than just cheesecake; isn't it? Shavuot, The Holiday of Jewish Unity

I certainly can't leave out politics here: Lapid's Marie Antionette Style Budget

Since we're "the People of the Book, here's a book review: Lorri M. Book Review: Country of Ash: A Jewish Doctor in Poland 1939-1945

Blogging is something to do in one's "spare time."  A recent HH hostess, Haveil Havelim #405- The Boston Marathon Terror Attack Edition, blogged that her "spare time" has up and left her.  We hope that her life will get simpler soon.

I just realized that most of the jbloggers in this little roundup are female.  Hmmm how could that have happened?  I'll try to balance things here.

And a post from my husband All You Have to Do is Threaten Violence

Let's end this with Dry Bones:

Havel Havelim at Homeshuling, Great Debut!

Homeshuling has joined the jblog carnival host club in hosting her first Havel Havelim.  Since she stuck to the "3 posts per blogger," rather than per blog (or unlimited,) I was curious as to which of my posts she'd include.  I have no idea at all how many I had submitted.  My practice is to send them in after posting if I consider them on a sufficiently suitable HH level.  And, no, I don't send in everything I post.  There are some excellent bloggers who barely post three times a week, so the three posts limit is very generous for them.  Between my two blogs I post a minimum of three times a day, almost never less than that.  Amy chose three very different posts from my blogs for which I thank her sincerely.

This edition of Havel Havelim includes a great variety of posts from the jblog world.  Take a look.

Just a reminder that the next Kosher Cooking Carnival will soon be hosted by Mirj of Miriyummy.  Please don't forget to send in your kosher food posts, everything about kosher food will be on the KCC menu.

How can I leave out JPIX? Leora is hosting the next edition.  For most of us Chanukah is a very photographed holiday, so be sure to send your posts to JPIX.

Too Bad There's No Such Thing as A Home Run With Bases Loaded in Soccer

Soccer Dad has saved the day with a Havel Havelim Memorial   לעילוי נשמת של רבקה l'ilui nishmata shel RivkA, to uplift RivkA's soul!  There's no one, no jblogger like Soccer Dad.  When he coordinated Havel Havelim, not only did he make sure there was an edition every week, hosting it whenever necesary, but he'd send extra suggested links to the host, beyond what we'd get from jbloggers who sent in in their own.  I thought about doing something like this memorial round-up for RivkA, but it was the one and only Soccer Dad who actually did it.  Thanks!

This isn't a comprehensive Havel Havelim.  It's just focused on family, community, the Jewish Blogging one.

Blog Signs In Our Times

There's hardly a thinking person out there who doesn't complain about the media.  Left, Right and Center we all would prefer that the media report things differently, more like the way we think, right?

In today's world anybody can become part of the international media, be instant experts even, quoted, linked and referred to.  For me, that's what blogging is all about.  I wimped out of trying a career as a mainstream journalist.  As a blogger, there are no rejection letters to deal with.  I have my very own public newspapers or magazines.  They are online, on the internet, and they are called "blogs."  I own them, edit them, invite whom I wish to contribute etc.  I just don't get paid in money.

As a blogger, I'm part of a "community" of bloggers, jbloggers, who blog about Jewish subjects and Israel.  I also blog about food, recipes, diet, family and whatever I want.  This isn't my only blog; I me-ander.  As I already wrote, I'm the boss, the Editor in Chief, owner and publisher.

Every week there's a big jblogger event, a floating internet magazine called Havel Havelim.  It "floats" from blog to blog as various jbloggers, weekly hosts, collect links to various posts (articles) and present them in the format of their choice.  This week's HH is hosted by A Time of the Signs.  To encourage one and all to visit a wide variety of blogs, only a summary or title, link-embedded, is listed.  I've used this sort of technique, too, and do prefer it.  To continue on that theme, click for details on how to participate.

Havel Havelim isn't the only jblog carnival.  There's JPIX and the Kosher Cooking Carnival.  Please visit them and learn more.  Promote and participate, too, please.

Thanks and Shavua Tov
Have a Wonderful Week

Chodesh Adar Tov! Havel Havelim Rosh for Chodesh Adar, Not A Joke

Chodesh Tov one and all.  This year we have one Adar but two days of Rosh Chodesh Adar.  It's supposed to be a happy time, but somehow my computers aren't cooperating in publishing this Havel Havelim.  I tried the method I used when blog carnival was down, but things change in Adar, and it didn't work.  Eventually, G-d willing, I'll have this posted on both my blogs, and I hope and pray that you intrepid jbloggers will post about and pass the links around so a maximum of readers will have the great opportunity to to read the posts from the humongous international collection of Jewish bloggers, jbloggers as we're known.

I've probably lost some posts along the way, those I added, because they didn't arrive via blog carnival, so if you can't find yours, please send it in the comments.  I'm pretty sure I caught all of the junk/spam they forwarded, if I missed something, please let me know via the comments.  And of course please feel free to write something nice in the comments if you think it applies.

Havel Havelim is the most veteran of the jblogger carnivals and probably one of the longest running blog carnivals there is. Blog carnivals are like "floating" internet magazines. They float from blog to blog, like "floating crap games," l'havdil.

Havel Havelim, the international jblog carnival, was established by Soccer Dad, and is now run by Jack. The term “Havel Havelim” is from Kohelet, Ecclesiastes, which was written by King Solomon, who built the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and later on got all bogged down in materialism and other “excesses” and finally realized that it was nothing but norishkeit, “havel” or in English “vanities.” I think that King Solomon and his father King David were the original "bloggers." The books they wrote, when you take them chapter by chapter, can easily be described as blog posts. The stones they used to write on made them last, so that we can read them now. I doubt if today's technology will preserve our words for so long.

There are two other jblogger carnivals, the Kosher Cooking Carnival and JPIX
which showcase everything about kosher food and picture posts with Jewish themes. If you're interested in hosting a KCC, please contact me.

Josh Waxman presents The Samaritans make Yisro bow posted at parshablog, saying, "It is a general feature of the Samaritan Torah that they "fix" the text to solve difficulties. This is something to keep in mind if you would think to rely on a Samaritan variant as preferable to the Masoretic text. Three examples from this week's parsha alone. They make Yitro bow to Moshe; they make the nation hear the sounds; and they emend Har Eval to Har Grizim, which they deem holy. There are others. Also, Ibn Ezra argues against Lower Biblical criticism."

Josh Waxman presents Charoses and the authenticity of the Zohar posted at parshablog, saying, "If named Tannaim or Amoraim mentioned in the Zohar think the tapuach is the apple, but according to true Chazal the tapuach is the citron, then how could the Zohar be anything other than a forgery?"

Yechezkel presents Ad K'dei Kach - The Ten Commandments Revisited posted at Achas L'Maala V'Sheva L'Matta, saying, "Looking at the Ten Commandments from a new perspective. It's deja vu all over again."
