Truth and Consequences, Ryan Lochte Drowning in Lies

US Swimmers | Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger, Gunnar Bentz & Ryan Lochte, lied about being held at gunpoint & robbed, realitywives.net

Growing up in post-World War Two USA, sportsmen and sportsmanship were the epitome of morality. Of course, that was long before there was an awareness and the systematic testing for all sorts of drugs to enhance performance and mask severe pain. Naivete and ignorance were valued characteristics for us audience. This wasn't only true when it came to sports. Show business, movies, theater, TV etc, was no better; it was possibly worse. And looking back without the rose-colored glasses, it's clear that politicians were also hiding a multitude of sins...

Just a week or so ago, Ryan Lochte and some teammates were basking in sympathy as innocent victims of crime. And then suddenly, unexpectedly for them, the proverbial #$%%$#!!# hit the fan as the truth came out that Ryan Lochte, Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and Jimmy Feigen were the perpetrators of a crime, not innocent victims.
Ryan Lochte on Rio Robbery: ‘I Overexaggerated That Story’

Originally, Lochte told NBC’s Billy Bush that he and the three swimmers were in a taxi headed back to the Olympic Village from a party at France House when they were pulled over by thieves impersonating police, who pulled guns and demanded they get on the ground and relinquish their money.
That version of events soon unraveled, and on Saturday, Conger offered another version of events. In a statement, Conger said that the group pulled into a gas station in order to use the restroom. Instead, they ended up relieving themselves against a wall, and Lochte damaged a sign, Conger wrote. When confronted by armed security to pay for the damage, the group offered $20 in U.S. currency and about $33 in Brazilian reais.
Being a top Olympic athlete, especially in the popular individual sports like swimming, is BIG BUSINESS. Winning in the swimming pool can provide a lifetime of comfortable big-time money. In the United States, Olympic athletes may still be officially "amateur," but they can earn big bucks from sponsors.

Ryan Lochte, like his teammate and Olympic legend Michael Phelps, is over thirty, and apparently a leader/role model for the younger swimmers. While Phelps came to Rio with his fiance and their baby, Lochte came to party.

It's good to hear that Lochte is losing sponsors, Speedo USA, Ralph Lauren Among Companies Dropping Ryan Lochte Amid False Robbery Claims.   But I think that the Olympic Committee should take much stronger steps, such as taking away their medals. Yes, take them away from all four tarnished athletes. That's because we don't want a situation in which the "follower" or the more successful at placing the blame on another can be immune from consequences. It's not enough for the sports-trainers to teach athletic skills, the athletes must learn morality.

Though, considering that the sportsmen in the Olympic Village were supplied with condoms along with their sports drinks and fitness facilities, I wonder what really goes on between competitions and the moral fiber of the athletes and their trainers.

Rio Olympics Report: No Sportsmanship in Anti-Israel Boycott

Israeli delegation at Rio olympics.. (photo credit:REUTERS) Jerusalem Post

The modern Olympics was envisioned to be an idyllic event when good sportsmanship and athletic prowess would override politics. Unfortunately, this isn't the case. The 2016 Rio Olympics has seen more of its share of refusals by Arab countries to compete and even ride a bus with Israeli athletes.
Rio 2016: Saudi competitor ‘forfeits match to avoid playing Israeli’
Political play in Rio: 'The Lebanese refused to board a bus with Israelis'
Israeli Olympic team snubbed by Facebook
This shouldn't be tolerated by the Olympic Committee. Any country showing such prejudice should be sent back home and not allowed to compete. Claims of injuries/illness, used as excused, must be examined by official neutral doctors.

And don't forget the deadly attack on the Israeli athletes forty-four years ago at the Munich 1972 Olympics.

Israeli Medals in Paralympics are More Important Than Winning in Regular Olympics

I really don't care if Israel never wins another "regular Olympics" medal, as long as we continue to win medals in the Paralympics.

Noam Gershony won Israel's first gold medal of the 2012 London Paralympics on Saturday, beating top-ranked American David Wagner 6-3, 6-1 in the Quad wheelchair tennis finals....
Gershony also won a bronze medal in the Paralympics' doubles tournament along with fellow countryman Shraga Weinberg.
The Israeli delegation so far picked up eight medals in London, including the three in men's tennis by Gerhsony and Weinberg, with shooter Doron Shaziri and handcyclist Koby Lion both winning silver, swimmer Inbal Pezaro taking two bronzes and swimmer Itzhak Mamistvalov claiming one bronze.
With limited budgets in sport, we must prioritize, and the handicapped, whether congenital, or due to army wounds, accidents or whatever the reason, should be given every chance to reach their potential and excel.

I think it says a lot about Israel, all good of course, that we do much better in the Paralympics than we do in the regular ones.  It's also interesting that we do very well in all sorts of Math and Science competitions and our various Nobel Prize awards are far out of proportion to our size.

Tiny Jamaica, with a population much smaller than Israel's wins lots of Olympic medals.

Are those Olympic medals really all that important?  Just because Jamaica has the highest per capita win rate, is it a good place to live?  No, not at all.

In the Paralympic Medal Count, Israel is davka ahead of Jamaica:
45 1258*
46 1102*
46 1102*
46 1102*
46 1102*
50 1045*
51 1012*
52 1001*
52 1001*
52 1001*
52 1001*
I think that a country should be judged more on how they help their handicapped than how well their fully able-bodied athletes do in international competitions.

There has been a lot of coverage of the Paralympics on Israeli television.  I caught a program in which they had a handicapped athlete discussing the competition.  I missed the beginning of the show so didn't quite know her handicap, but from what she said, I gathered that either she didn't have legs or they were paralyzed.  And she hd been certain that from her experience it was easy to live without functioning legs.   She was telling us how amazing one of the competitors was, because what he could do with one leg in target shooting made her rethink the usefulness of legs.

This attitude may sound a bit strange, but it reminded me of the kids I observed in Alyn Children's Orthopedic Hospital over twenty years when one of my sons was hospitalized there for a couple of weeks.  The kids, who lived there full-time, were having a great time whizzing around in their wheelchairs.  That was their life, and they were kids like all other kids.

May this be in memory of
who thanked G-d
every morning when he awoke
l'ilu'i nishmato
may his soul ascend higher

This Year Tisha B'Av Reminds Me Of Chanukah

Can anyone guess why?

Tisha B'Av=Beit HaMikdash (Holy Temple) destruction
Chanukah=Greeks Attack Temple
This Year:
Olympics Begin on Eve of Tisha B'Av
Origin of Olympics=Greece
Yes, the world, including Israel, is obsessed with the Greek circus, that competition in which people will do anything to win.
An Israeli swimmer has taken on the goyishe "show must go on" instead of properly mourning his father according to Jewish Law. But an Iranian swimmer was more "idealistic" and gave up his chance rather than be in the same pool as an Israeli. The Israeli thinks less of his father. This saddens me.
During my senior year in high school, just over a year after making my decision to become a Torah Jew, I read Antigone and was mesmerized by her idealism.
Today is the 9th of Av, Tisha B'Av, the day we commemorate with a 25 hour fast, many of the tragedies in Jewish History. Davka this focus on the Greek inspired Olympic Games during the saddest day on the Jewish Calendar...
