"Mussar," Never Planned, But That's A Mussar Lesson

Over the many decades, actually over half a century, since I began to live a life of Torah and Mitzvot, of the little I heard about "Musser," it didn't attract me.

Yesterday, the Shabbat just after Rosh Hashanah, actually a Tzom Gedalya when we feast rather than fast, I was searching for a book to read. I knew that I had a pile of books from various friends, and usually there are some great ones. Nothing interested me. I really tried, but after a few pages, they were closed and piled up. I gave each a chance by reading at least ten pages, and the pile of rejects was growing. I was getting pretty frustrated and depressed by the time I got to Climbing Jacob's Ladder: One Man's Journey to Rediscover a Jewish Spiritual Tradition, by Alan Morinis. And when I discovered that it was about Musser, I audibly groaned.

I know pretty much nothing about "Mussar," except for the expression a "a musser spiel," which seems to mean some sort of rant that criticizes how a person or group is behaving. At least that's how I've always understood it.

But I was desperate enough to try reading the book. I was pleasantly surprised. The way that Morinis defines Mussar, which he found after his search for a spiritual reawakening, is very different from what I had been expecting. It does involve trying to improve yourself, but it's closer to the what I had learned a few years ago in a "Life Coaching" course. And it involves learning how to accept and take advantage of the unexpected, like my finding davka that book in the house, and davka the day after Rosh Hashanah.

From what I now understand, Mussar doesn't tell us how to live, it tells us how to deal with life, make the best of life, or how to play with the cards we've been dealt.

Apparently, we're supposed to "train" ourselves, since there are Mussar "exercises" to prepare us for life's difficulties. I guess it is like Life Coaching. And also like Life Coaching, each Mussar teacher teaches it differently.

There are definitely some very valuables principles in Mussar, and I must adapt them into my way of thinking and living. More on this at a later time, Gd willing.

guest post: Understanding Melech by Mr Cohen

Understanding Melech
a guest post by Mr. Cohen
written 2016/3/24 and updated 2016/9/12

The word king [melech] is one of the most important words in Judaism.

But in our times, the full meaning of that word has been lost, because Jews alive today have never stood in the presence of a real live human king. Even our parents and grandparents never stood in the presence of a real live human king, and that makes the full meaning of the word melech lost even more. So we continue to say the word melech every day in our prayers, but we do not really understand what it means.

This problem afflicts even the most pious Orthodox Jews; not just the Reform or the Conservative or the unaffiliated.

If we were standing in the presence of a real live human king right now, we would all be trembling with fear.  Many of us would be hysterical with fear. Also, we would be unable to think about anything other than the king and how to please him. We would not speak even one unnecessary word in the presence of the king, for fear of provoking the wrath of the king.

And with good reason! A real king has the power to immediately sentence anyone who angers him to death, or other severe punishments, and nobody can overrule him. A real king has the power to immediately grant riches and rewards and privileges and honor to anyone who pleases him, and nobody can stop him. A real king also has the power to reward or punish deeds that happened many years ago.

When a real king commands you to do something, you MUST do it, even you do not want to do it. When a real king commands you to not do something, you must NOT do it, even you very much want to do it.

In a nation ruled by a real live human king, people avoid doing things that might cause even the mere appearance of disloyalty.

In a nation ruled by a real live human king, people will not risk doing things that might be offensive to the king, even if there is only a small chance those things might be displeasing to the king.

In a nation ruled by a real live human king, people will not risk insulting a person who is known to be loved or honored by the king.

If we would internalize the full meaning of the word melech, then we would feel 1,000 times more motivated to break-away from our bad habits and correct our sins with teshuvah.

If we would internalize the full meaning of the word melech, then we would feel much more enthusiastic about performing mitzvot.

If we would internalize the full meaning of the word melech, then we would feel much less desire to speak: gossip, rumors, foul language, insults, lies and complaints. It is not even necessary to mention that internalizing the meaning of melech would soon cause a complete end to talking-in-shul, especially during prayers times and the reading of the Torah Scroll.

If we would internalize the full meaning of the word melech, then we speak fewer words in general.  Even our permitted words would be fewer, not only our forbidden words.

If we would be always-aware that Melech is watching all our deeds, then all forms of theft and stealing and fraud would become impossible-to-commit.

If we would internalize the full meaning of the word melech, then we would discuss more divrei Torah when sitting at the Shabbat table, and fewer devarim betailim.

In conclusion, we do not really know the meaning of the word melech, and our ability to serve GYD correctly is poorer because of it. Our failure comprehend the meaning of the word melech is the ultimate source of all our troubles and sorrows.

GUEST POST: Rambam Rejected Childless Messiah

Rambam Rejected Childless Messiah
a guest post by Mr. Cohen
_____________________________________________________________
Rambam, Hilchot Melachim, Chapter 4, paragraph 8:
The King Messiah will take a one 13th part [7.69%]
of all the lands that Israel conquers, for himself,
and for his descendants forever.

Rambam, commentary on Mishnah Sanhedrin, chapter 10:
When the Mashiach dies, his son will rule after him,
and his grandson will rule after that.
_____________________________________________________________
Over the past 2,000 years, 36 Jewish men have claimed to be the messiah.
34 of them had no children, one of them had a daughter,
and one of them had two sons who died before he died.
None of them had a son and grandson to follow him.

When Rambam described the messiah as having a son and a grandson,
he achieved a super-concise refutation of all the false messiahs in the
1,000 years before him and all the false messiahs in the 1,000 years after him.
_____________________________________________________________
For more proof that the messiah will have sons, see the Metsudath David
commentary on Yechezkel chapter 44 verse 3 and Yechezkel chapter 45 verse 7,
which identifies the prince who leaves an inheritance to his sons as the King Messiah.
