Why Pray for the IDF?

Rabbi Chaim Shmulevitz of the Mirrer Yeshivah
(born 1902 CE, died 1979 CE) used to ask every year
during Neilah that people daven for the soldiers of the army of Israel.

Rabbi Yosef Dov Soloveitchik (born 1903 CE, died 1993 CE)
once referred to an oil-stained, grime-covered Israeli Army uniform
as “bigdei kodesh” – holy garments. 

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach said that when he had
the urge to pray at the grave-sites of the righteous, he went
to Mount Herzl and prayed at the grave-site of the fallen
soldiers who died ‘Al Kiddush HaShem – sanctifying GYD’s Name.
CHRONOLOGY:
Rabbi Shlomoh Zalman Auerbach was born in year 1910 CE and died in 1995 CE.

Rabbi Avigdor Miller (a popular Chareidi Rabbi and author, 
born 1908 CE, died 2001 CE) delivered a free public lecture
in the last year of his life, in which he said we should pray
for the Israeli Army:
“If they are defending us, then we should pray for them.”

Rabbi Lazer Brody (a contemporary Breslov Rabbi) taught:
“…HaShem should protect the soldiers and the police…
we have to express our thanks to every Israeli soldier and police-man…”

According to an article published by Matzav on 2014 July 18,
the following prominent Orthodox Rabbis were praying
for the IDF (Israeli Army) at that time:

Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky,
the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, the Sadigura Rebbe,
and Rabbi Shalom Cohen (Rosh Yeshivat Porat Yosef)

especially those Jews who live in Israel, are guilty of:

[1] being poresh min hatzibbur [separating from the Jewish community]

[2] lacking hakarat hatov [gratitude to those who help you]

[3] repaying good with evil (see Mishlei/Proverbs, chapter 17, verse 13)

[4] failing to judge their fellow Jews favorably (Avot, chapter 1, paragraph 6)

[6] relying on miracles (tractate Pesachim, page 64B) for national defense
