Davidson Center, Old City Jerusalem, Recently Reopened

A few weeks ago I spent an enjoyable few hours at  The Jerusalem Archaeological Park - Davidson Center. It's newly reopened after being totally redone as an archeological, educational and tourist center. I must admit that in my fifty plus 50+ years in Israel, I have no memory of ever visiting it, though I certainly passed by many times, as it's near the Dung Gate, not far from the Kotel.

The people who invited me to join them had hired one of the center's guides, who ended up being a charming multilinguist doing Sherut Leumi, National Service.

Not only did our guide know the material very well, the history of everything we saw, but she tried to make some of the walking easier for us.
Yes, if you're going to go the Davidson Center, be prepared for serious walking and quite a lot of steps.

We were impressed by groups of elderly tourists who seemed braver and more agile than we were. Some of you many know that I'm a walker, but I'm not a climber. I even have a bit of a phobia when it comes to walking down hills, especially when the ground is smooth or has gravel. The route was doable for me.
Considering that you have to reserve one of these guides, I'd suggest being very upfront when reserving to find out if there's an easy or shortened route.
Of course, in my mind, I was constantly comparing it to Tel Shiloh, Ancient Shiloh  the archeological site just about a mile downhill from my house. Until rather recently, it, too, required lots of walking, but in recent years, they've made access roads, so even the furthest sections are accessible by car. For a "handicapped" tour you have to arrange the guide and driver in advance.

As you can see in the photos, the Davidson Center is beautiful. Our guide kept telling us that all that we see on display is the genuine article, not reproductions. Yes, these artifacts are what had been unearthed and cleaned up over the many years of excavations.

Here and there, there are places to sit, but I'd recommend carrying one of those lightweight folding chairs, such as they have in many museums. The Davidson Center should offer them, even if it requires a small deposit to remind people to return them.

There were a couple of things that did bother me. One should be easy to remedy. I caught a few spelling errors in the English subtitles in some movies they showed.

But the thing that bothered me the most was in the movie about Jerusalem. It was fine that they had it in three languages according to who was speaking, Hebrew, English and Arabic with English and Hebrew subtitles. (I didn't notice Arabic subtitles, though that may be a fault of mine.)

I was very bothered by the fact that the timeline of the History of Jerusalem seemed to be purposely muddled in an attempt to hide the truth about Jerusalem's History.

Any honest objective historian would agree with me.
  • Jerusalem was first the National Capital and Religious Center of the Jews.
  • After the destruction of the Second Holy Temple of Jews and the development of Christianity, Christian theologians began to call it a holy city, but there was no independent government. The Vatican is in Rome.
  • Islam began after Christianity, and Jerusalem is its third holiest city.
  • To confuse people, both Christianity and Islam have adopted some of the Jewish Biblical narrative as their own, but those religions weren't contemporaries of Judaism's Biblical characters.
This is the story that should be told, not the distorted one I saw in their movie.

Despite my above complaint, I really do recommend visiting the Davidson Center if you are looking for something to do in the area of the Kotel. It's possible to travel by bus or taxi, and there's a kosher dairy restaurant near the entrance for light meals.

Kotel Crumbling Sign Time to Ascend Temple Mount!

There have been lots of news reports and pictures posted of enormous rocks, boulders falling from the Kotel, Western Wall. And there are numerous theories about why this is suddenly happening.
  • illegal, dangerous, unsupervised digging by the Wakf
  • mini-earthquakes/tremors
The Kotel, Photo by Batya Medad
Or can we take this as a hint  that Gd is getting angry that most Jews still prefer the less holy outer wall, support wall for the Temple Mount, Har Habayit?

Is it that everytime a Jew calls the Kotel "the holiest site for the Jewish People" something cracks just a tiny bit?

Of course, nothing can be proven, but let's first begin correcting our speech. The holiest site in the world for the Jewish People, Jewish Religion is The Temple Mount. Gd returned it to us in 1967 during the miraculous Six Days War, 28th of Iyyar.

New Plugat Hakotel Exhibit, Museum, Movie

It's hard to categorize the newest venue in Jerusalem's Old City, the Plugat Hakotel. It's called a "museum," but there aren't really any exhibits. And unlike most every other museum, there's no walking around, so it's very good for those who find standard museums difficult to handle.

The Plugat Hakotel Museum is in the building of the historic Plugat Hakotel, on Rechov Hayehudim near the corner of Plugat Hakotel Street, where the patrols that protected Jewish worshipers at the Kotel almost a hundred years ago were quartered. The street level rooms have been set up to show a very good historic reenactment movie, which tells the basic story, fictionalized of course.

Yesterday I went to the Plugat Hakotel Museum with a group of friends from all over the country. It's best to call in advance to book a time slot.

We saw the English dubbed version of the movie which had Hebrew subtitles. It is very well written and acted and tells how members of the Betar Zionist youth movement, inspired by Zeev Jabotinsky worked together to not only guard Jewish worshipers but risk jail time by blowing the shofar at the end of the Yom Kippur fast. Yes, the British forbade shofar blowing.

For me this building has special meaning, because it was our first home in Israel, Maon Betar. We knew the history of it, but at that time, the Old City was undergoing major repairs to make it more habitable and modern. Just now, a half a century after being liberated from illegal Jordanian occupation has the museum been opened.

Where Were You? Liberation of Jerusalem, Kotel, Temple Mount 1967

I'll never forget spring 1967. The terrible stress and worry which predated the miraculous Six Days War. culminated in Israel's liberation of Jerusalem's Old City, including the Temple Mount and Kotel, Western Wall.

During those tumultuous weeks I was simultaneously busy with all of the things that American high school students did in their last weeks of school, being that I was about to graduate and finally leave Great Neck. As one of the very few Jewish student activists, busy with NCSY (National Conference of Synagogue Youth,) SSSJ (Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry,) Betar and all the pro-Israel activities I could find, my priorities were very clear to me.

It was hard to be "two places at once," listening to all of the news updates and attending lame duck classes, which no longer had any real purpose. The school administration made it pretty clear that they could take revenge and withhold our diplomas if we had dared to skip classes or even the "Senior Class Beach Day."  At Jones Beach, I went from student to student giving them the opportunity to donate money to Israel via the NCSY Torah Fund. And in class, my friend and I took turns sitting on a gigantic transistor radio which was tuned to a news station, so we could hear the latest from Israel.

But the television newscast I remember best found me babysitting, just across the street from my house. That was when I saw and heard the reports of the IDF liberating the Old City and the Kotel. I can't find it on youtube with the loud crying of the soldiers, which I remember so clearly to this day. As they cried, so did I.

Do you have any memories of that historic and miraculous time? If so, what are they?

GUEST POST: IF JOSHUA WERE ALIVE TODAY

If Joshua Were Alive Today
(a guest post by Mr. Cohen)

Joshua was one of the greatest leaders in Jewish History,
and the proof is that an entire book of the Jewish Bible
was named after him – a claim very few people can make.

Joshua, chapter 23, verse 6, narrates the prophet Joshua
instructing the entire Jewish nation to be very strong
to obey all of the commandments revealed by Moses
(“the Torah”), and also be very careful to not deviate
from them in any way.

Joshua, chapter 23, verse 7, narrates the prophet Joshua
instructing the entire Jewish nation to avoid mentioning
the names of foreign gods, and also to avoid causing
other people to swear by foreign gods.

Joshua, chapter 23, verses 12 to 13,
narrates G*D revealing that:
If Jews intermarry with non-Jews, then He will NOT
help the Jews conquer the Land of Israel.
And even worse, the sin of intermarriage will cause
the Jews to be driven out from the Land of Israel.

In our times, the ONLY Jews who believe that all
the commandments revealed by Moses should
be obeyed [when it is still possible to do so],
are the Orthodox Jews.

In our times, the ONLY Jews whose religious beliefs
include not mentioning the names of foreign gods and
not causing other people to swear by them are Orthodox Jews.

In our times, the ONLY Jews who are totally opposed
to intermarriage with non-Jews, and refuse to accept it,
are the Orthodox Jews.

Therefore, if Joshua were alive today,
he would probably be an Orthodox Jew!

GUEST POST: IF NEHEMIAH WERE ALIVE TODAY

If Nehemiah Were Alive Today
(a guest post by Mr. Cohen)

Nehemiah was one of the greatest leaders in Jewish History,
and the proof is that an entire book of the Jewish Bible
was named after him – a claim very few people can make.

Nehemiah, chapter 10, verses 30 to 32, shows the Jewish people
accepting an oath, which was reinforced by a curse, to practice
the entire Torah of Moses, especially the prohibition against
intermarriage with non-Jews, and especially the prohibition
against desecrating Shabbat by using it as a shopping day,
and especially the prohibition against desecrating the
Sabbatical year [with farming activities during that year].

Nehemiah, chapter 13, verse 17, shows Nehemiah striving
against the prominent men of Judah, because they desecrated
Shabbat, which Nehemiah described as “an evil deed”.

The next verse, verse 18, shows Nehemiah saying that
desecrating Shabbat in the past has already resulted in
Divine punishment against Jews, and desecrating Shabbat
in the future will result in additional Divine anger against Jews.

The next verse, verse 19, shows Nehemiah closing the
gates of Jerusalem during the entire Shabbat, to prevent
the desecration of Shabbat by using it as a shopping day.

Nehemiah, chapter 13, verse 24, shows Nehemiah
noticing that Jews have intermarried.

The next verse, verse 25, shows Nehemiah arguing against
Jews who intermarried with non-Jews, and cursing them,
and hitting them, and pulling their hair out, and forcing
them to swear a sacred oath to not intermarry with non-Jews.

Two verses later, verse 27 shows Nehemiah describing
intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews as
a “great evil” [ra’ah gedolah] and a “sin against GYD”.

Nehemiah’s actions against intermarried Jews were never
criticized by any Jewish prophet, even though prophets
were still active in his time; and were never criticized by
any Rabbi of: the Mishnah, or the Talmud or the Midrash.

In our times, the ONLY Jews who totally oppose intermarriage
with non-Jews like Nehemiah did, and also obey Shabbat and
the Sabbatical Year like Nehemiah taught, are the Orthodox Jews.

Therefore, if Nehemiah were alive today, he would be Orthodox!

GUEST POST: If Ezra Were Alive Today

If Ezra Were Alive Today
(a guest post by Mr. Cohen)

Ezra was one of the greatest leaders in Jewish History,
and the proof is that an entire book of the Jewish Bible
was named after him – a claim very few people can make.

The Biblical Book of Ezra reveals details about Ezra’s religious teachings:

Ezra, chapter 1, verse 3, reveals that Ezra wanted
to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem.

Ezra, chapter 9, verse 3, reveals that Ezra was completely
opposed to intermarriage between Jews and non-Jews;
this verse states that when Ezra discovered that Jews
were intermarrying with Gentiles, he felt so aggravated
that he tore his clothes, and also tore his own hair out from
his head, and also ripped the hairs out from his own beard.

In verse 12, Ezra commanded all Jews to NOT intermarry with non-Jews.

In verse 14, Ezra mentioned that intermarriage would make GYD angry at the Jews.

In verse 15, Ezra mentioned that intermarriage is inexcusable.

Ezra, chapter 10, verse 3, reveals that under Ezra’s guidance,
ALL the non-Jewish wives of Jewish men, and the children
born to them, were permanently sent away.

Since all the children of non-Jewish women were permanently
sent away, even though they all had Jewish fathers, Ezra taught us,
through his actions, that people born to non-Jewish mothers
are NOT Jewish, even if they have Jewish fathers.

The last two words of Ezra, chapter 10, verse 3 are:
VeCaTorah Yeaseh”, which means that Ezra’s policy of
Jewishness by matrilineal descent was “according to the Torah”.

The two words which precede “VeCaTorah Yeaseh” are
BeMitzvat Elokainu”, which means that Ezra’s policy of
Jewishness by matrilineal descent was
“according to the command of our GYD”.

Ezra’s policy of Jewishness by matrilineal descent was
never contradicted by any Jewish prophet, even though
Jewish prophets were still active in Ezra’s time.

Ezra’s policy of Jewishness by matrilineal descent was
never contradicted by any Rabbi of: the Mishnah,
the Jerusalem Talmud, the Babylonian Talmud,
Rashi, Tosefos, Zohar, Midrash, Rambam, Ramban,
or Code of Jewish Law [Shulchan Aruch].

Ezra, chapter 7, verse 6, describes Ezra as:
an expert scholar of the Torah of Moses.
This description is never contradicted by any prophet,
nor is it ever disputed by any Rabbis of:
the Mishnah, Talmud or Midrash.

In our times, Orthodox Jews are the ONLY Jews who
want to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, like Ezra;
and completely oppose intermarriage with non-Jews,
like Ezra; and also define Jewishness exclusively by
matrilineal descent, like Ezra.

Therefore, if Ezra were alive today, he would
probably be categorized as Orthodox!
