Rabbi Pinchas Stolper, ZTz"L, Plugged the Assimilation Leak

NCSY National Convention 1967
That's me receiving Standards Award from Rabbi Stolper

Rabbi Pinchas Stolper passed away a few weeks ago. If you google his name, you'll find information and a number of obituaries. None of them touches on the man who was instrumental in introducing me to "Torah True Judaism" as he had called it, during my years, mid-late 1960s, in NCSY National Conference of Synagogue Youth of the OU.

Immediately upon reading an email announcing his death and planned burial in Jerusalem, I contacted a few old friends from NCSY who live here in Israel not far from me. It was clear to me that I had to attend his funeral. According to Jewish Tradition, attending the funeral honors the dead person, and a shiva visit comforts the mourners. From the announcement there wouldn't even be a shiva in Israel.

Who, you may be wondering, was Rabbi Stolper? And how close was I to him? To be perfectly honest, I'd never been invited to his home and don't remember much in actual personal conversations, except when we were preparing posters for the NCSY marchers in the 1967 Salute to Israel Parade, just after the Six Days War. Rabbi Stolper couldn't contain his joy at Israel's miraculous victory. Rabbi Stolper did attend my wedding in 1970 where he spoke about Israeli History from the vantage point of a Betari, which we had in common. See my husband's blog post about Rabbi Stolper on the Betar blog.

In 1963 when I first got involved in NCSY I was just looking for friends. We had just moved to Great Neck a few months before, and I didn't fit in at all. My family ended up joining the Great Neck Synagogue, an Orthodox shul which may not have been a good fit religiously, but the price was right. Orthodox we weren't, nor Sabbath observers nor kosher.

Post World War Two most people considered Orthodox Jewry a dying breed. Considering the attraction of assimilation, poverty of the Great Depression, the trauma of Holocaust and the Jewish men who spent years away from home, the UOJCA, now called OU was desperate to keep Jewish teens Jewish. In the early 1950s they established NCSY. Member synagogues were encouraged to establish chapters and have activities for the youth. At that time there were few Jewish Day Schools, and not all the families could afford to send their children. Also, many member families were like mine, not at all religious. So NCSY had a dual aim:
  • Keep the religious kids religious.
  • Introduce Judaism to the non-observant and encourage them to follow the mitzvot
NCSY wasn't a Zionist youth movement. The term "aliyah" wasn't heard officially at all in the 1960s, though quite a few of my NCSY friends are living here in Israel now.

I'm not sure of the exact year, but sometime before my joining NCSY, Rabbi Pinchas Stolper had been appointed as National Director. He must have succeeded, because there was soon an Assistant National Director, Rabbi Chaim Wasserman.

Rabbi Stolper was a Zionist activist and a Betari. He had been Natziv, Head of North American Betar in the very early 1950s. He and his wife tried living in Israel but went back to New York. Rabbi Stolper built an amazing youth organization with chapters, grouped by regions, all over North America. He was an amazing administrator. NCSY events went like clockwork; each session started and ended on time. Chapters hosted regional Shabbat programs. For teens like myself, this was our first introduction to Shabbat. Even those from religious homes learned to enjoy Shabbat even more than they had. We sang Jewish tunes and danced and sang and danced. I'm convinced that Torah True Judaism entered my heart and mind via my dancing feet and loud singing, not that I understood the words of the songs. The educational "sessions" were led by some brilliant people. There are things I remember to this day.

At National Conventions, held in a large hotel, The Pine View, only Shabbat ended late. But that was the plan. Rabbi Stolper led the Havdala, and some of us girls were given lit candles to hold high. We were told that the higher the candle, the taller our future husband would be. Rabbi Stolper was most inspiring during Havdala.

The key to the success in reaching Jewish teens like myself was the tolerance of the staff of advisors. We were given time and acceptance while learning and experiencing Torah True Judaism. In those days, tzniyut modesty was rare, even religious women wore sleeveless and Orthodox synagogues hosted dances. Some OU member synagogues didn't have a mechitza separation and even had mixed seating. The OU was in a "war for Orthodox survival," and Rabbi Stolper was assigned to save Jewish youth. Yes, he and his staff worked hard stop the flood of assimilation, and they succeeded. The terms "outreach" and "baal teshuva movement" came afterwards. In the 1960s Yeshiva University Youth Bureau also had activities for teens on Shabbat and weeklong Seminars late summer and during winter vacation. It wasn't a national organization; I went to some of their events, too.

The Friday of Rabbi Stolper's funeral as one of my NCSY friends and I waited with his Israeli relatives for the bereaved children and body to arrive from the states, I wondered why there weren't mobs of people. From my perspective, Rabbi's Stolper's influence on North American Jewry was humongous, but it was half a century ago and more. Or can we say that his great success in strengthening Torah Judaism in teens has produced a generation that is incapable of fully comprehending what a miraculous success he had accomplished?

GUEST POST: JUDAISM UNDER ROME

JUDAISM UNDER THE ROMAN EMPIRE
a GUEST POST from Mr. Cohen

NOTE: The four quotes shown below are from Flavius Josephus,
who was born in year 37 CE and was still alive in 81 CE.

“It was known even to the Romans that they [the Jews]
did no work of any kind when the seventh day came around…”

“The next day Pilate took his seat on the tribunal in the great stadium
and summoned the mob, on the pretext that he was ready to give them answer.

Instead, he gave a pre-arranged signal to the soldiers to surround the Jews in full armor, and the troops formed a ring three [Roman soldiers] deep.  The Jews were dumbfounded at the unexpected sight, but Pilate, declared that he would cut them to pieces unless they accepted images of Caesar, nodded to their soldiers to bare [reveal] their swords.

At this the Jews, as though by agreement, fell to the ground in a body and bent their necks, shouting that they were ready to be killed, rather than transgress the Law [of the Torah].

Amazed at the intensity of their religious fervor, Pilate ordered the standards to be removed from Jerusalem forthwith.”

“…Domitian [the Emperor of Rome from year 81 to 96 CE. He was the younger brother of Titus and son of Vespasian] was becoming more and more of a tyrant as his reign proceeded, hostile to converts to Judaism for their refusal to participate in the worship which he as a living emperor demanded…”

“At this time the people of Damascus, learning of the destruction of the Roman force, were eager to exterminate the Jews in their midst.  As they had them cooped in the gymnasium for a long time now, taking this precaution as a result of suspicion, the task appeared perfectly simple: but they were afraid of their own wives, who had almost all gone over to the Jewish religion, so that their chief anxiety was to keep them in the dark.”

Salute to Israel Parade, Memories

Today in New York there will be the Salute to Israel Parade.  Just the name of it brings back such vivid memories.  I marched and danced at/with/in all the early parades from the first until 1970.  There were years I did it twice, rushing back to the start off.  First I marched/danced with NCSY and then I'd march with Betar.  I had such energy then.

There's only one picture I have of myself participating in the Salute to Israel Parade. It's the one that the Jewish Agency used in its poster to advertise the following year's parade.

Can you guess which dancer is me?  I'm still very close friends with the friend I had danced with then.  She also lives in Israel, not far from me.  We even sometimes take the same Bible classes.

Just recently she confided that it was the Israeli folk dancing which I had gotten her involved that brought her to Zionism and Israel.  We were privileged to represent NCSY in the Fred Berk Leadership and Choreography Course, 1967-68, which was held in the 92nd Street Y each year.  The following year we led the NCSY Dance Group in the big Folk Dance Festival that Fred was in charge of.

When I look back on my life, these events were definite highlights. All of the young Zionist activists took part in one way or another. We got to know each other in person.  In those days there weren't any cellphones or computers, internet etc.  If you corresponded you used paper and stamps.  Even phone calls were expensive.  There weren't any security concerns.  Terrorism was unheard of.  It was truly a great time to be growing up in.

I was a young high school student when the parade first began.  I traveled to the city with friends from my NCSY chapter of the Great Neck Synagogue. They were all older than me and possibly I was the only girl in the group.  They also knew their way around Manhattan and navigated, finding where we started to march.  And when it was over, they made sure I got home safely.

Almost fifty years later, Jews from all over are still marching in the parade, which makes me very happy.  Enjoy!  But remember, marching in the Salute to Israel Parade isn't a substitute for making aliyah and living in Israel.

The message of this week's Parshat Shavua, Torah Portion of the Week is that you're not supposed to think of the pros, cons and difficulties.  Just come here and live in the Land G-d promised us.

Fellow Jews, How About Relocating to Israel?

The OU is promoting relocating to various Jewish communities in the United States.  Apparently, these fairs they've been running are so successful that the number of communities asking to be promoted is growing.  And some of those communities are in the Greater New York area, which has me very surprised.  I never would have guess that those communities need the extra support from such an event.

Now surprise, I'm sure, but I don't understand how Israel is not considered an option.  Granted the OU is an American Jewish organization that wants to perpetuate itself, but still there are Jewish principles, such as the mitzvah of ישוב הארץ yishuv ha'Aretz, settling the Land of Israel.

My husband and I made aliyah just two months after our wedding in the summer of 1970.  That was decades before the establishment of Nefesh B'Nefesh.  Today's olim have a much easier time than we did, and we consider our aliyah to best decision we ever made, tying with our move to Shiloh.

In 1970, not only weren't there cell phones, or internet, but not every Israeli family had a phone.  Many had to wait a minimum of a year or even seven to get a phone line.  We communicated with family and friends by sending letters, paper letters in envelopes with stamps.  Letters written between countries were frequently on aerogrammes, a one page, very thin and light paper, which we'd fold and seal.  It cost less than an airmail stamp. I have a number of friends whose very first trip to Israel was their aliyah.  Most people could not afford a "pilot trip" and the concept didn't exist then.

We weren't among the very first families in Shiloh.  We moved to Shiloh in time for the school year, the summer of 1981, when the population doubled from thirty plus families to sixty plus families.  Shiloh was the first Jewish community in our area, and we enthusiastically welcomed Eli and Ma'ale Levona.  Davka, last night a picture of the founding ceremony of Ma'ale Levona was posted on our email list as a quiz/challenge asking the veterans here who is in the picture.  I'm the young mother holding that adorable baby.

The establishment ceremony of Ma'ale Levona, spring, 1984, which we from Shiloh attended.

a more up to date picture of Ma'ale Levona

Today there are so many different sorts of places for people to live in Israel, from small communities to large cities.  Israel is now a modern high tech country.  If you're in the market to move, so move here and do yourselves a big favor!

The OU Chases Another Tail

Too little, too late describes the OU's support of the Jews of Gush Katif. They were proudly neutral before Disengagement, but then decided to fund-raise for the poor refugees, the Jewish DP's forced out of their homes for one reason and one reason only, their Jewish religion. Nu, was that really so surprising before it happened? I'm not the only person who predicted the present situation.

Opposing Disengagement would have meant that the OU valued Jewish settlement of Eretz Yisrael over pc policies.

Now, the OU was embarrassed in the states, because it never really inspected the meat slaughtering houses under its auspices and approval. So now they're trying to flex their muscles and threatening to rescind their hechsher.

Kosher food is more than a myopic look at the knife, count the salt and time the soaking.

My guess is that more multi-tasking women should be hired to supervise kashrut and run the large Jewish organizations. We can't do any worse...

Why Let It Happen Again?

The OU fundraises for the victims of Disengagement, the exilees, but it did nothing with its massive membership to prevent Disengagement. Every time I see their ad my blood boils.

They did nothing!

Instead of asking their rabbis and synagogues to protest Disengagement, they preached helping Darfur.

Immediately after Disengagement, Olmert announced even more drastic destruction of Jewish Life in our Holy Land, and that was predictable, too.

WHERE IS THE OUTRAGE?

WHERE ARE THE PROTESTS?

WHERE ARE YOU--OU?

Are you planning a new department for your fundraising, if G-d forbid Olmert and your President Bush have their way?

  • I don't want to be an object of your pity!
  • I don't want my home to be destroyed!
  • I don't want to be exiled!
  • I don't want to be murdered by the terrorists the world is funding!
  • It's not about Jerusalem!

Don't think that by protesting the division of Jerusalem you're doing your job!

Jerusalem can't stand alone! G-d helped us liberate Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria as a package deal. Oxygen doesn't go to the heart without lungs.

Yes, "their grief is our grief," but not the way you mean it. Their grief is that they were abandoned by their brothers, our brothers.

Don't abandon us, like you abandoned them!
