Jewish Theology integrales two rather contradictory concepts, The Power of Gd and the Gift He gave us, Free Will. I don't have time to delve into this complicated relationship now, but today I witnessed some of Gd's Powers.
As I was doing some things in the living area of my house, which faces east, south and west, I noticed that the sky to the west was getting dark. That could mean rain. And then suddenly I saw a strange flash to the east. I began to wonder if that had been lightning, when suddenly I heard a boom, thunder. So retroactively I knew that it had been lightning.
A few seconds later I had already taken out a siddur, Jewish Prayer Book, and said the appropriate blessings:
We humans like to think that we're clever, but we can't fully control the weather. Here in the Land of Israel, Gd uses the weather as a barometer to show approval or disapproval of our behavior. Some years we have perfect quantities of rain at the best times, accompanied by the right heat and cold facilitate miraculously blessed harvests. There are other years when lack of rain, too much or badly timed rain, along with damaging temperatures turn our Land into a barren wilderness. This doesn't happen by chance.
May we succeed in following Gd's Commandments correctly and deserve the best weather for the fertility of The Land of Israel.

Succot ושמחת בחגך Why the Joy?
One of Judaism's interesting questions is:
The grapes are rather dusty, and some are dried out, eaten by birds, bees etc. And the leaves are awfully brown and ripped. But there are still grapes for humans to feast on.
Why is the Succot Holiday called the "Joyful" one? ושמחת בחגךThe other day, while walking outside in Shiloh and wondering when Gd will bless us with cleansing and health-producing, also necessary for agriculture rain, I noticed the grapes. OK, I didn't need to go very far to see grapes, since we have a few vines by our house.
The grapes are rather dusty, and some are dried out, eaten by birds, bees etc. And the leaves are awfully brown and ripped. But there are still grapes for humans to feast on.
I began to think of how it must have been in olden times, a few thousand years ago, when food storage meant drying and pickling food. Instead of refrigerators, freezers and modern containers, they used caves and ceramic urns.
In this late summer season, people couldn't rely on piped water from high tech reservoirs, desalination, drip agriculture etc. It hasn't rained for six months. We frequently complain of the high prices of fruit and vegetables, because the summer crops are finished and the winter ones can't grow without water. The products of modern high tech agriculture isn't cheap.
How did our ancestors manage? During the almost four hundred years of the Mishkan, Tabernacle in Shiloh, there may have been grapes growing right where my grapes grow today. Considering how easily grapes grow here without any professional care, it's obvious to me that this is the Land Gd created for grape growing.
Finding and preparing sufficient food for the many late summer, Tishrei holidays is challenging enough in today's modern world. It's hard to imagine how much more difficult it was thousands of years ago. And then think of the joy when the food was served. Or many the mitzvah, the commandment to be joyful helped them enjoy what they could find to eat.
In Ancient Times, I doubt that the sukkot one lived in during the holiday was built onto people's homes or terraces. They left the comfort of their home to go up to Shiloh and later to Jerusalem for mass prayers. Conditions weren't like today's hotels, three enormous meals and unlimited afternoon cake. Vineyards like mine were treasured and shared, since there wasn't much to eat.
People were grateful and joyful for what they had ושמחת בחגך Visamachta bichaggecha, And be joyful in Your holiday.

Who's responsible?
Yesterday not everyone checked weather forecasts. Is that the reason so many people died in flash floods here in Israel?
Death is a very difficult theological subject in all religions, especially Judaism. On one had we recognize that Gd creates life and its limits/conditions or end. But on the other hand we have responsibilities. We're not puppets controlled by Gd. We have Free Will. That is why Gd can reward and punish us, and we pay our final "price" after death in Olam Haba, the World to Come.
Friends who know the curriculum of the official Israeli Tour Guide Course confirmed that paying attention to weather forecasts, especially rain in the south and resulting flash floods, say its a requirement. The group, which had been caught in that flash flood, should have cancelled their plans, or totally changed its itinerary.
If the administration and tour guide who approved and led the fatal trip are held criminally negligent, it won't bring the dead back to life. But they still must be held legally accountable. In Judaism it's not acceptable to just say, "it's the will of Gd." These kids didn't just die in their sleep from unpreventable causes. We don't know Gd's will, and it's not for us to decide on such things.
Remember that the searching endangered innocent lives, too.

Snow Scam?
I keep hearing all this hype about "major snow storm" or a "blizzard" that is expected here in the hilly, OK mountainous parts of Israel, like Jerusalem, Gush Etzion and Binyamin-Shomron where Shiloh is located.
Jerusalem and all of the regions surrounding it have canceled school long before even one snowflake has fallen from the heavens. And that's long before any numbers have actually stuck to the ground. In order to guarantee that they stick, Jerusalem's Mayor Barkat wants the roads emptied. Maybe he's hoping to ski. Now, if you want clear roads, and only a couple of inches of snow, if any, are really going to fall, then keep the vehicles heating and melting the snow. With all the cars, buses and trucks around, we can probably save money and have clear roads for free.
For years I've been mocking these well organized media "snow panics." It's clear why they are being done. Someone is making money. The television media stars and cameramen, probably directors and producers, too, have been out for hours or more all bundled up ready to interview the first snowflake. They had better watch out with the lights, or the poor thing will melt before he or is it she or it can get a name out. That would be a shame, wouldn't it?
And the other people/unions who/that make money from these snow scams are the "snow removal experts." No doubt they're the ones who have instructed Barkat on how to make sure the snow looks impressive by emptying the roads so the snow can pile to its maximum. They really want to show their prowess on the snowplows. Maybe I'm wrong, but I keep thinking of their trying to puff up the flurries on a flake version of Viagra.
Nu, so I decided to do some independent research. Instead of reading the news headlines and interpretations of the forecast numbers. I've been going to the weather sites that give me simple to understand numbers. Remember that I'm a CPA's daughter...
Let's start with Arutz 7, which has me totally confused. I checked both Ariel and Jerusalem. The temperatures for both are almost identical, but the drash, the interpretation is different:
Ariel
4-13°Today January 06
Windy
0-4°Wednesday January 07
Rain Mixed with Snow
0-5°Thursday January 08

3-12°Today January 06

0-4°Wednesday January 07
Heavy Snow
0-4°Thursday January 08

0-3°Friday January 09

And here's another weather site that shows us Shiloh:
Please look carefully at the numbers. Shiloh's weather is between Ariel and Jerusalem. Even their "Feels like," which would be considered "wind chill factor" isn't as low as the temperatures on the Arutz 7 site.
And here's another one, Weather in Jerusalem:
Maybe someone forgot to tell them that the password is "snow." Perhaps they're not on the "take." Granted I may be wrong. I'm just a nobody at a dead-end job who blogs for my sanity. The joke may be on me. But I can't imagine the blizzard that's being hyped... Not this week at least.
