First Blog "Carnival," Roundup of 2020, Tevet 5780

Winter in the Holyland, when a "nice day" means gentle rain, because if we don't get enough rainfall in the winter, we'll suffer dangerous drought throughout the following year and beyond.

Gd willing, I'll provide you with lots of interesting and varied reading material from Jewish and Israeli blogs. Of course, I'm only responsible for my own blog posts, not the opinions of others. And I do try to provide a variety of blogs and articles.

Make yourself comfortable with hot coffee or a bowl of soup, or read while traveling in bus or train or plane. I'm always interested in meeting new blogs, so if you have any to suggest, please let me know in the comments. You're also invited to give your opinions concerning which posts or blogs your enjoyed the most.

All I will do is list the titles, and hope that you feel tempted to click and read. Most bloggers are happy to read your comments. We don't like to feel we're blogging to an empty cloud of nothingness. Enjoy, and please tell me what you think.

Keeping Cool Blog Carnival, Summer 5779, 2019

Forecast is for scorching hot weather today, so get comfortable and stay in the shade, indoors or out.

There's always something to read on the internet. No, not the news, just blogs, Jewish/Israeli ones. They're independent, unique, quirky. If you have any for me to add to my blog rolls, please let me know in the comments here. You can read them at home, breaks at work, eating or lazing by the pool, on your computer, phone, tablet and probably even a smart television, so relax and enjoy this selection of of recommended blog posts.

As is my practice, I'm just going to list titles of articles aka blog posts to whet your curiosity. Enjoy, comment and share.  I'd love your opinions, so don't be shy. Just a reminder, I'm not responsible for the content of the individual articles.

"Indian Summer" Israeli/Jewish Blog Roundup

Once upon a time, there was a weekly Israeli/Jewish Blog Roundup called Havel Havelim... And for a shorter time there were monthly  JPIX and the Kosher Cooking Carnival. This was all during the heyday of independent blogging, when people all over the world took advantage of the internet to establish our own brand of journalism.

Our roundups aka "blog carnivals" floated from blog to blog. We took turns, since in those days hosting would bring new readers and fans. And the custom was also for the bloggers included in the roundup/carnival to mention the blog carnival in their own blogs. We were a community.

Mainstream newspapers and magazines noticed the unpaid talent free for the taking and added "blogs" to their internet versions. So, many people, including bloggers, became voluntary op-ed writers for those commercial publications.

Over the years, independent blogging has become less popular, though many people still blog, and blogs are used as inexpensive internet sites for services and advertising.

As you must know, since you're reading this, I do still blog. Actually I blog on two independent blogs, this one and A Jewish Grandmother, and occasionally on the Arutz 7 site. It's also possible that that the Jewish Press sometimes uses my posts in their blog section.

I blog pretty frequently, though not as obsessively, one on each blog daily, as I used to blog. In those days I'd set up articles to be posted on my blogs on days I wasn't to be home. Most bloggers blog no more than once a week or even less frequently.

After this long introduction, I'm going to list the titles (embedded with links of course) of a number of interesting blog posts. A few will be from my own blogs, but the vast majority are from other blogs. Please visit, comment and share. I hope that you enjoy them, find them thought provoking etc. And of course, I'm not responsible for the opinions of others.

HH 18 Blog Posts from All Over

It's time for another Havel Havelim, the round-up of blog posts from various Jewish and Israeli blogs. I've been posting just eighteen 18 חי Chai, Life the past few years.

And I also include a few kosher cooking/food posts, so this is also a joint KCC, Kosher Cooking Carnival. There was a time when both blog carnivals were hosted by other bloggers, but unfortunately that's history.  Of course, if you'd like to host one, please let me know. There are facebook pages for both blog carnivals, HH and KCC, which you're welcome to join for updates.

Blogging isn't dead. It's still the best way to get out your message and not be dependent on the whims of others aka editors of various publications.

I hope that you read the posts, comment and share. And I'd love for your suggestions of more Jewish and Israeli blogs via the comments here. There's no significance in the order of posts, nor have I included the name of the blog. So, dig in and enjoy!

18 Interesting Jewish/Israeli Blog Posts, HH/KCC, First of 2017

from way back when
This past Sunday, I promised my facebook friends who need some time to heal from American Elections that I'd try hard not to say/write a word about what's happening there. So, I figured it would be a good time to post another edition of a joint Havel Havelim and Kosher Cooking Carnival.
As has been my custom, since I have found myself "holding the bag," being the one and only blog carnival host for both of these Jewish blog carnivals, I just choose a variety of eighteen 18 חי Chai Life posts from various blogs, including my own obviously.

You can get more information on the facebook pages, Havel Havelim and Kosher Cooking Carnival, and if you'd like to get more active, then please email me. These editions now come out periodically, according to my moods.

Remember that these blog carnivals are for everyone, bloggers and non-bloggers alike, to read, comment and share. I hope that you take a look at the various blog (notice no mention of the blogs' names) posts included here and let me know what you think of the selection. Enjoy!

Havel Havelim Jewish Blog Carnival

It's time again to give everyone a chance to see what's new, what's being posted by Jewish bloggers here in Israel and abroad. Yes, it's time for Havel Havelim and as has been my custom of late, I'm only including eighteen blog posts.

Of the 18 חי Chai, Life, some will be about Judaism, some politics, Torah and kosher food. Yes, so consider this also a Kosher Cooking Carnival, which used to be a separate blog carnival. I suggest trying to check out all links, comment and share, thanks. We have Facebook pages for both, HH and KCC. And since my blog roll on A Jewish Grandmother was somehow swallowed up by blogger, I've lost a lot the blogs I used to follow and use for KCC, so I'd appreciate suggestions, thanks.

Please remember that these posts have been written by many others, besides those from my blogs, and I'm not responsible for the content.

First Havel Havelim of 5777

Havel Havelim is a Jewish/Israeli blog carnival, which means a roundup of posts from various blogs. I don't particularly agree with everything included here, but this isn't just about what I like. There will also be some posts about kosher food, so consider this also as the first Kosher Cooking Carnival of 5777. Now, if you haven't caught on yet, 5777 is the Jewish Year.

Both HH and KCC used to float around the blogosphere, hosted by various bloggers, but hosting seems to be out of style, so I've taken it on myself to keep these blog carnivals going. Both have their facebook pages, which you can join, click HH and KCC.

I've been limiting Havel Havelim to what I think are the eighteen most interesting or varied posts, and I don't identify the blog. I only list the title of the post to try to entice readers. So, if you're a blogger, you may want to try composing more "enticing" titles... Remember that you don't have to be a blogger to read, comment and share the posts in Havel Havelim. Please let me know in the comments which are your favorites and what interesting blogs I may have left out. Thanks and enjoy!

My "Alternative International Jewish Newspaper," aka HH*

*HH = Havel Havelim is the oldest, most veteran and longest-running Jewish blog carnival in the world! HH used to float from blog to blog weekly, but the past who knows how long it has been appearing floundering on my blogs, appearing every month or so. I still think that a round-up of Jewish and Israeli blog posts from all over has value and should interest people. I do describe blogging as running my own internet magazine, so it makes sense to let my readers know that there are other blogs around, ok, maybe not quite as fascinating as mine...or maybe more so.... There's a facebook group in which I keep in touch with other bloggers and those who like to read HH, click here. Years ago, I started another Jewish blog carnival, which I call the Kosher Cooking Carnival, but now I just add the kosher food posts to Havel Havelim.

I hope that long winded introduction didn't send you scrolling for something else to read. If you're still here, good. Let me know which is your favorite post or two or three, and also let me know which other blogs you like and think should be included. And if you're a blogger who'd like to host a very special Jewish carnival aka Havel Havelim, then you're blessed.  Please let me know. And also if you have a blog post to include for next time, then mail the link to me, thanks, shilohmuse@gmail.com.

To keep this blog carnival alive, I'm limiting it to 18 חי Chai=Life posts! Now, please click on the various post titles; read, comment and share, of course.

I hope you enjoy the posts I chose. Please read, comment and of course share. And don't forget to tell everyone where you found them. And share this edition of Havel Havelim, too, thank you!

Blog Round-Up, HH of Sorts

You know what they say about a rose being a rose no matter what the name, so is a Jewish and Israeli blog round-up by hosted me still a Havel Havelim, no matter what the format?

While you're mulling over that, I'd like to remind you that whatever Havel Havelim communications still go on are on our facebook page, which you can join. And I'd really be happy if others would host, not just me... I have no idea when I'll be doing one again, though they seem to pop up about once a month. And I'm also including some food posts, so consider this also a Kosher Cooking Carnival, which also has a facebook page.

If you have any questions about the blog carnivals, hosting or want to send me links, just write to, shilohmuse@gmail.com thanks.

Enough with the introduction, but I'd still like to remind you that this will only work well if you read/visit the blogs included, maybe even comment and of course please share this and whatever else you find interesting.

I'm returning to my "secret" format, just giving a linked title and not saying who sent or what blog. Yes, that's another reason to try to be clever with titles. And I'd like to know which is your favorite post. Please let me know in the comments, thanks.

OK, on with the show!! I will try to vary by mixing up genres.

Jewish and Israeli Blog Posts, aka Havel Havelim

You know what they say about branding. Try to keep a recognizable name, so I'll just keep calling my blog "round ups" Havel Havelim. There's a facebook page, on which there are updates about when I'm posting one. Join it! This time I really didn't give much notice, sorry. You can always email me (shilohmuse@gmail.com) links with HH as subject, and I'll file them away until the mood strikes.

Since I'm the only one doing them, I do it when I'm in the mood, about once a month. Since I'm the host, I'll decide what goes in, and I'll also include any posts that have had been sent to me the past few weeks. I'd appreciate your visiting the various blogs, comment, share etc. thanks. This time I'm making categories and just listing titles, not the blog/blogger. I hope that makes people more curious.

Are There Still Jewish/Israeli Bloggers? HH and KCC

It has been  four weeks since I last posted a Havel Havelim, the old weekly round-up of Jewish and Israeli blog posts.

From the updates on my blog rolls, meaning the list of blogs on the sidebars of my blogs,  there still are people blogging. I sometimes look at the various blog posts and enjoy reading them. What has very obviously petered out is the community, the camaraderie that we once enjoyed. I miss that. So, although the former niceties of thanking hosts of the Jewish blog carnivals Havel Havelim and Kosher Cooking Carnival seem to have gone the way of the Long Distance Operator, I still think that offering my readers a taste of other blogs is a good and productive thing to do. This time I will also include posts that would have been in the Kosher Cooking Carnival. I'd love it if others felt like hosting either one or both or the combo, so if you're interested, please let me know at shilohmuse@gmail.com. Both blog carnivals have facebook pages, Havel Havelim and Kosher Cooking Carnival, just click the names and join.

I hope that you check out the other blogs and posts, comment and share. Remember that blogging gives us the opportunity to post what the mainstream media leaves out. This time I will just feature a few blogs I like. They are very different. In addition I will add links to some of my own blog posts from the past few weeks. I would really appreciate your feedback on this. Here goes:

Oops! Ellul Already!! Havel Havelim-Kosher Cooking Carnival Combo

Cross-posted on A Jewish Grandmother...

We're a week into the Jewish Month of Ellul, which means that in three weeks it'll be Rosh Hashannah, and a week after that's over it's Yom Kippur and a few days after that we have the Succot Holiday which ends with Simchat Torah.

Yes, for Jews of all stripes there's lots to do and lots to think about. And for Jewish bloggers there should be lots to blog about, so please send me links to the posts, OK?
Havel Havelim is the long-running weekly international Jewish blog carnival, which had been started many years ago (by modern internet standards) by Soccer Dad, who no longer blogs. It floats from blog to blog, and we keep it organized on our facebook page. If you'd like to host one, please let us know, and it's yours! I'm always willing to help newbies. Hosting isn't hard and it's a good way to get your blog better known and know others.
The Kosher Cooking Carnival is  the monthly (in theory--appearing on or around Rosh Chodesh, the beginning of the Jewish Month,) blog carnival I began a number of years ago on the specific topic of kosher food. It can include posts about every aspect from Halacha, Jewish Law, to recipes, customs, kosher cookbooks and restaurants. You can also volunteer to host an edition; we also have a facebook page.
To guarantee your post's inclusion in one of the blog carnivals, please send me the link, with a short blurb describing it, to shilohmuse@gmail.com and ither HH or KCC as subject, thanks. If there will be a different host, I'll just forward it. Since Havel Havelim is weekly, please send the link before Shabbat your time, thanks. I not only include links sent to me, but I also look for others.

Remember, that you don't have to be a blogger to read, comment and share the posts on Havel Havelim or the Kosher Cooking Carnival.

Tzedek, Tzeddek, that's right!!

First are posts sent to me, then mine and last will be some I've found. Responsibility for content is that of the writer, not mine. Jewish bloggers are a heterogeneous group of people with a wide variety of opinions. If we didn't have opinions, we wouldn't have anything to blog about. If you'd like to be included or have a favorite blog you think should be in it, then don't be shy; send me a link. In the meantime, enjoy:

Yael Shahar, two very interesting posts: Book Review: The Disappearance of God by Richard Elliot Friedman, The Disappearance of God follows the gradual decrease of the divine presence in the Biblical writings—from the unquestioned guide of the Patriarchs, to the distant but still accessible voice of the Prophets, to the absent Deity of Esther. What is the meaning of this trend, and what does it portend for our day? However, I found there was more to the story. As thousands were waiting for the program to begin, over by the Kotel in the Women's Section, a small elite group was gathered. I saw them and photographed the historic moment. Torah: Bond for Eternity

17th of Tammuz Fast Postponed, HH and KCC, Too

Cross-posted on me-ander

I couldn't think of a clever title for this combined Havel Havelim and Kosher Cooking Carnival, besides the fact that they are all "postponed."
  • Yesterday, Shabbat was the 17th of Tammuz, but since we don't fast, except for Yom Kippur, on Shabbat, the fast was postponed  until today.
  • I usually post my Havel Havelim, the international Jewish blog carnival on Saturday night after Shabbat, but that, too was postponed until today.
  • I really had planned on posting a Kosher Cooking Carnival for Rosh Chodesh Tammuz, and that has obviously been postponed, since it's now closer to Av than to Tammuz, so this combines the two months.
So, I hope you don't mind that lazy summer's day, when I'm not working and not eating I've decided to produce another joint HH and KCC.

And now, on with the show!

Jerusalem Macrolovers WHY FAST??
Today, the 18th of Tammuz, fasting the postponed 17th of Tammuz fast, when we all mourn the loss of our Holy Temple and the Rosenfeld family of Kochav Hashachar, and their loved ones all over, mourns their precious son Malachi Moshe HaYa"D.

We aren't giving up. We aren't finished. We aren't history. We have a future. G-d willing we will be truly sovereign and rebuild our Holy Temple in our Holy City of Jerusalem, and the days of mourning will be turned into days of festivity and worship of G-d, and all of those in the Next World will return to us in joy together!
