Elul and the Truth About this War, Guest Post by Netivot Girl

It is Elul. For religious Jews this is a time for contemplation and trying to better ourselves. I made Aliya in 1977 and have never regretted that decision. Friends from abroad ask me if I feel safe. Well, given the rampant anti-Semitism against Jews the world over, I can honestly say yes. However, there are so many things that trouble me. I am incredibly disappointed that many of our politicians and IDF heads have refused to take upon themselves responsibility for the massacre of October 7th. It galls me that our Chief of Staff Herzl Ha'Levi not only has refused to do so; he is continuing to promote his buddies to important IDF posts.

It is unforgivable that the UN and many nations have labeled us with words that FB won't allow me to post!! Where were their voices when many hundreds of our women were gang-raped? The 'Me Too Movement' is for every woman who is not Israeli or Jewish? The barbarians who raped our women had their friends photograph them on their phones. The same with the burning of babies in their cribs; where was the outcry? The perpetrators of these barbaric actions used their phones to document their actions. Yes, the war goes on. But it could have ended months ago had Hamas fighters laid down their arms and returned our hostages. I believe that the hypocrisy of the world is sickening. The UN has yet to denounce Hamas' horrific behavior. The Red Cross never went to investigate the conditions of our hostages, very few of whom are still alive IMHO. Has the world lost its moral compass? I believe it has indeed. Colonel Richard Kemp was a commander of British troops in Afghanistan; he has repeatedly commented that our IDF (Israel Defense Forces) is the most moral army in the world. Sadly, we have lost far too many of our IDF personnel because of that. Our troops have dropped leaflets and even phoned Gazans recommending that they leave any area that will be bombed in the near future. Unlike the USA, we do NOT carpet bomb. If Israel is conducting genocide, then how is it that the number of Gazans has greatly risen during the past few years????

Many thousands of my fellow Israelis have been living in hotels for many months as Hezbollah continues to destroy homes, farmland and other buildings up north. Where is the outcry? We are America's most important ally in the Middle East. Many Muslim Arabs are policemen and even sit in our Knesset. We are NOT an apartheid state; you can see women wearing veils in nearby Beer Sheva; I see them all the time. Moreover many Arabs sit as judges in our courts. Samer Haj Yehia was named the chairman of the board of directors of Bank Leumi, one of Israel's largest banks in 2019. Unlike every single Arab country in our area, gays are allowed to be open about their sexual orientation. In fact, the Speaker of our Knesset is gay; married and has a few children. (He is among the very few Likud politicians for whom I still hold respect.) Douglas Murray is an author of many bestselling books. HE has been in Gaza numerous times during the years. A British gay non-Jew, he remains one of Israel's staunchest defenders. He 'gets it;' he knows what's going on. He visited the site where volunteers spent MONTHS using DNA and other information to discover the identity of the thousands of bodies that were left to rot.

So, if you are Jewish, please be a proud Jew. Stand up against the numerous anti-Israel protests. And most importantly, check the facts before you attack us verbally or otherwise. May He above have mercy on us in our tiny country. I write this as a resident of Netivot which has been rocketed by Hamas since Israel pulled out all of its citizens from Gaza in 2005. We left millions of dollars worth of agricultural equipment which could have aided Gaza's Muslim population turn that strip of land into a modern-day Singapore. Instead, those idiots burned all of that equipment down! Gaza WAS a free entity from 2005 until the October 7th massacre of 2023. Do I expect anyone to change their opinions because of this post? No I do not; anti-Zionism is the newest nomenclature for anti-Semitism. You are either with us or against us. To my fellow Israelis I say, "Stand tough and be unified." To other people I say, when we said the words, "Never Again" we sure as he*l meant them!! Stay safe and please feel free to share this post.

Guest Post by Netivotgirl

Some of you may remember the wonderful posts my dear friend aka "Netivotgirl" had posted in the past about living in Netivot. Here's something she sent to friends and agreed that I post it here on Shiloh Musings. You can read more of her articles here by searching "Shiloh Musings Netivotgirl."

Facebook will NOT allow me to share this post so I am emailing it to some of my close friends. EVERYTHING mentioned here is fact taken from sites such as Human Rights Watch. Why am I not surprised? I welcome any and all remarks from you my friends. We need not agree but we must keep the lines of communication open between us. It's bad enough that anti-Semitism is currently rampant the world over; as Jews no matter what our political stance we are all loathed at present (if we can be recognized as being Jewish.) I will add here that later this year will be the first American election in which I will NOT cast my vote since making aliyah in 1977. In my opinion, Trump is totally off his rocker and Biden is a doddering incompetent man who is no friend of Israel. He is also (IMHO) a crook along with his son Hunter. These are my opinions and you may differ with me.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although I am an avid reader, I'm not a particularly gifted writer unlike some of my friends (Ariella McCauley Kopels, Paula R. Stern, and Batya Medad, that means you three!) Yesterday during Shavuot, I finished reading one thick book and half of a second one after reading all of the book of Psalms. I want to share some thoughts with you all to explain why I have decided to take a break from Facebook. As an Orthodox Jew, I believe that everything is decreed in heaven. Here in Israel we have been living in a surreal nightmare since October 7th of last year. Everyone has somebody they love serving in the IDF and many of us have lost people on that dreadful day. (I lost Judith Weinstein Haggai with whom over the years I participated in numerous in-service courses in Beer Sheva.) At the end of this missive, I will bring the sources for the facts that will be mentioned.

"In January and February of 2016, Human Rights Watch interviewed 21 Sunni Muslim Arab women from Iraq and women and girls from the Yezidi minority ethnic group, all of whom had fled ISIS-controlled areas, most in late 2015. Several of the Yezidis, abducted by ISIS in mid-2014, had spent more than a year in captivity. They described being forcibly converted to Islam, kept in sexual slavery, bought and sold in slave markets, and passed among as many as four ISIS members." The world was silent.

In 2022, "Rohingya Muslims are still awaiting justice and protection of their rights five years after the Myanmar military began a sweeping campaign of massacres, rape, and arson ….on August 25, 2017, Human Rights Watch said. More than 730,000 Rohingya fled to precarious, flood-prone camps in Bangladesh, while about 600,000 remain under oppressive rule in Myanmar." How did the world react? A few words of concern were expressed but life went on as usual.

In March 2023, "The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) announced in a report marking the 12th anniversary of the popular uprising for democracy in Syria that it has documented the deaths of 230,224 Syrian civilians, including 15,272 who died due to torture." The world was silent.

Now let's mention the facts: The Palestinians actually had a state. In 2005, Israel put into action a plan called, "The Disengagement from Gaza." IDF installations and forces were removed and over 9000 Israeli citizens living in 25 settlements were evicted. Jews who lived in the settlements in that area left behind millions of dollars' worth of greenhouses that could have helped turn the Gaza Strip into a modern Singapore. However, all of that expensive machinery and agricultural apparatus was put on fire and destroyed! Fast forward to October 7th, 2023. Israel suffered an incursion by barbarians who swept through Moshavim and Kibbutzim in the Gaza Envelope. Entire families were shot and killed. Babies were burned in their cribs and often beheaded. Women were gang-raped and their bodies dismembered. (i.e. breasts were found near the defiled women.) In total, 251 men, women and children were abducted into Gaza. Hostages who were later released told chilling stories of the abuse they suffered. And the world? Suddenly non-Jews the world over began spewing anti-Semitic chants such as, "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free." (Few if any of those protesters can name to which river and sea are referred.) Neither Egypt nor Jordan (nor any other country for that matter) cares to take in refugees from Gaza. Why is this? Nobody wants them. Why are we Israelis responsible for them? As Douglas Murray, famed British author and reporter has mentioned many times, Israel is the only nation in the world that is not allowed to win a war. We the Jews are the indigenous people in our land, speaking the same language that was used 3000 years ago. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is built upon the remains of our holy Temple. Coins excavated from that area show ancient Hebrew letters and symbols. Biden has been attempting to force upon us a "two state solution" which IMHO would in essence be rewarding the Arabs for the worst genocidal attack we Jews have suffered since the Holocaust in WWII.

It seems like yesterday (actually it was on November 10th, 1975) that the UN General Assembly adopted G.A. Resolution 3379, which declared Zionism to be “a form of racism and racial discrimination.” I feel that I must distance myself from what is posted on Facebook about current events in order to retain my sanity. I run a fund for poverty stricken brides from Netivot and am involved with other communal activities so I will not be bored. So forgive me if I remove myself from the public arena. As mentioned earlier, sources will appear below.

I will also add that I have no idea how long I will take my break. What I can say with certainty is that not listening to the news nor watching videos on my laptop has brought me some small measure of serenity as the world continues to go berserk.

Guest Post: Waiting for Normal Life to Return to Netivot

From Life on the border with Gaza - things people may not know (but should)

Waiting for Normal Life to Return to Netivot
by Esther Hilf Revivo

We had a quiet (I wish) night Motzei Shabbat. There were 4 rockets sent to the Eshkol Region -- but nobody gives a ding-dong about THAT! The tanks are still there so the terrorists are behaving themselves, relatively speaking. If you call 40,000 people rioting and throwing thousands of grenades and other explosives at our IDF all through the night behaving. But there was no breaching of the fence.

Our government has to look for a long-term solution, which it does NOT CARE TO DO! So we, especially those on the border, continue to suffer from the whims of Hamas, as do innocent Gazans who want peace, and indeed they do exist! I've heard one speak twice on my laptop via Adele Raemer, a friend living on the border Kibbutz, Nirim.

We are fed up with the apathy of the government, media and all of the country outside of the area affected by the present violence. Below I will present an article posted in The Times of Israel on Friday, March 29th, by Joshua Davidovich and address each of his points.

I originally penned this on Friday but nothing has changed since then. We are in the same stalemate! Rioting continued on the border and the noise was unbearable at border settlements and clearly heard here in Netivot from Friday until motzei Shabbat! We were awakened on Shabbat at 4 and 6 a.m. by huge BOOMS from an IDF tank that targeted a Hamas outpost. The government reacts but is not proactive in seeking solutions.

Before I answer Mr. Davidovich’s points, let me tell you that ALL of Netivot has descended on the shops to fill up on food, bottled water and gas for their cars. We are mentally prepared for war. Everyone is walking on eggshells and feels terribly tense. The noise last night was horrific. I couldn't stop thinking of our soldiers out there. Well, here are what aforementioned Joshua Davidovich sitting safely in Central Israel had to write and my responses:

1. "BRACING FOR THE WORST: Massive protests on the Gaza border are not planned to take place until Saturday afternoon, but Israel already seems to be at peak gird."
BOOOOOOOMING all last night. That was Thursday, March 28, 2019. The first arrivers to the party threw HUGE explosives at our IDF. One thankfully blew up in their faces seriously wounding 5 terrorists. What a boom that was. My friends at the border had ANOTHER sleepless night. How much more can we take?
2. “According to the Walla news site, senior commanders are preparing for a variety of scenarios, including the possibility of deterioration to the point of a large-scale ground operation. TOI’s Judah Ari Gross notes that “The Israeli military is preparing for the possibility that Saturday’s protests will be some of the most violent yet.”
We know. We see the tanks and here the drones etc. But there have been preparations before and the GOVERNMENT HAS WIMPED OUT. We’ve had a year of Hamas violence specifically rockets, grenades, incendiary balloons, etc. AND WE ARE FED UP!
3. “Though Hamas is referring to the Land Day demonstrations as the ‘million-man march,’ only a few tens of thousands of people are expected to participate. The weather, which is currently predicted to be cold, rainy and windy, may help keep the numbers even lower than that,” he adds.
A FEW? How are "only tens of thousands” a few?! Get your butt down here to smell the fires; hear the noise from the grenades thrown at our soldiers, and tell me how you would feel if you were not be able to calm your children's fears nor stop them wetting their beds at ages 10- 12!!!
4. “According to Yedioth Ahronoth, troops will be stationed along the border starting Friday, with ‘tensions reaching their peak.’ Trying for a truce: Reports indicate that Egyptian mediators are still working furiously to try to broker some sort of calm ahead of the expected melee. On Thursday, the delegation passed a message from Israel to Hamas, telling the Gaza-ruling terror group: ‘Any mistake you make on Saturday could lead to war,’ Channel 12 news reports."
Yeah, yeah. Heard that for a year but we still have no solution. HAMAS IS STILL CALLING THE SHOTS! We only react mildly, which doesn’t help at all.
5. Walla’s Amir Bohbot said that it will be hard to predict how the demonstrators will act following the “extreme speeches and incitement to violence against Israel. “ Especially after the brainwashing by Hamas, which according to events of the last year is leading them back toward Israel.”
BRAINWASHED. That is the problem exactly. From kindergarten, if not earlier, children are taught to "KILL THE JEWS!" Hamas, as you all know, has special camps to teach elementary school age children how to become terrorists. May Hashem (G-d) continue to create miracles for us, and may the government have the guts to finally do something other than allow more Qatari money into Gaza!

Fires in the Fields

It was rather strange to see black smoke coming out of the fields on our drive to Jerusalem from Netivot.

I had been trying to photograph the gorgeous sunset.

What happens down south in Israel? Since unlike the reports of fires in the rest of the country, I hadn't heard anything in the news.

I know that Israelis do have a strange, to my New York mind, and dangerous custom of burning weeds, even in residential areas, like Shiloh. It drives me nuts when there are fires in gardens, but there's no way I can stop it. My neighbors say that it keeps the snakes away.

Does anyone know more?

Real Life in Israel's Southern Front by Netivotgirl

Some of you may remember the wonderful posts my dear friend aka "Netivotgirl" had posted in the past about living in Netivot. Here's something she posted on her facebook page and requested that I post it here on Shiloh Musings.

What a royal pain in the bu*t! Those horrible folks in Gaza just threw another rocket into my town, Netivot, Israeli territory since 1948. I was in our storage room under our apt. building where I store the items for my 'poor brides fund.' Suddenly we heard the sound of the shriek. This was the sound of the iron dome which successfully shot down 1 or 2 rockets right above the synagogue across the street from my home.
The siren went off AFTER the iron dome went into action. I am NOT scared- I had to calm down everyone around me; remember to lock my storage room and run up the stairway to relative safety when we heard the BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMS of the rockets being shot down by.
You folks abroad shouldn't know from this crap. This "present" from Gaza is because 15,000 of our soldiers are going from door to door (in over 100 degree heat)in Judea and Samaria looking for 3 kidnapped teenagers who were picked up as hitchikers on their way home from school 16 days ago. Apparently the Chamas and other terrorist groups are unhappy that we are doing this.
Oh, btw, the folks who did this were terrorists released in previous releases that Israel was forced to make as "gestures of peace." What peace? With who? People who target civilians and do so from within their own heavily populated areas to try to avoid retaliation? It takes two to tango. Thank you Mr. Obama and Mr. Kerry for our present untenable situation.
Friends, please share this on your timelines!!.

According to the Jerusalem Post:
The Iron Dome anti-rocket defense system successfully intercepted two rockets fired from Gaza over the southern city of Netivot on Sunday evening, the IDF confirmed.

Sprinting to Safety

The 100 meter final at the 1988 Seoul
Olympics remains one of the most
infamous and fascinating moments
in the games' history. The race was
won in a world record time by
Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson.
But he was to be stripped of his medal
and record under the shadow of drug use.
When it comes to Olympics medals, many athletes are willing to risk their health by taking drugs to break records and win, especially in the sprints, which need such powerful muscles and time is so short. Professional athletes run for medals, fame and money, but residents of the Israeli south are running for their lives!

Israelis in the south aren't chasing fame and fortune; they're running to safety.
  • And instead of wearing fashionable running clothes, sometimes they are lucky to be wearing more than an old sweatsuit/pyjamas or a bathrobe.
  • Instead of scientifically designed running shoes, they are wearing easy to slip on slippers.
  • Instead of their arms efficiently pumping to maximize speed, they're holding their valuables, an infant and toddler while trying to encourage the other children to keep up.
  • Instead of being encouraged by cheering fans, they hear the alarms.
  • Instead of the audience exploding in cheers, their home explodes from the missile before their eyes.
A citizen clears away wreckage caused by a Grad rocket hitting a house in Netivot on Monday,
November 12 (photo credit: Edi Israel/Flash90)

A sprint in Netivot and other southern Israel locations is not a game.  And the finish line doesn't promise a medal nor a world record.  The runners don't even know where to run to in many situations, because there's no way to predict exactly where the bomb, deadly missile will explode.

More voices from the south:

"I am so tense. We had a siren and rocket at 7 something this morning. In Netivot my
daughters (who are both scared by the whole situation, and one is expecting) didn't
have to teach as their schools are partly made up of caravans. I teach at the edge of Netivot. A LOT of students showed up so I taught literature (as planned but we lack migun*. (The building of a huge 'mamad**' is continuing but not yet completed.) So I was on pins and needles-- if there is a siren, it's under the desk with pupils. I've done it before with hysterical pupils and it ain't fun!

....got home at 2.15.Then 2.40 - another siren and BOOM. I just thank G-d I wasn't at school anymore, where they DEFINITELY heard it and went bonkers!! My hubby and I stayed home during Cast Lead (babysat for our building,) but with married kids who ARE terrified and grandkiddies, I am feeling the pressure build up as I DIDN'T then. And see no end in sight. And have no idea how - and -  live with even worse tension day in and out all year long."

"As I was walking my dogs, I just saw fireworks: Iron Dome shooting down two rockets. Fireworks, but the real deal. Would have been beautiful - if it weren't so ominous and frightening."

"Morning has arrived. Checking updates on the newspapers and Facebook sites.I want to have a shower, but am certain that as soon as I am under the water there will be a Red Alert. I am supposed to go to Tel Aviv to work but concerned about the drive which has me hugging the Gaza Strip (it takes me about an hour to drive out of missile range, and when you are driving outside the cities you don't even hear alerts or sirens. I want to go to do my medical clowning after my meetings, but that would mean driving back home after dark- an even scarier prospect in this war-torn situation . I am truly held prisoner by my fears through living in this area . And I am sure I am not alone. Life in the shadows of the rockets. Life on the Gaza border. Just thought you should know."

"So this is the deal in our house today: schools in Ashkelon are open (after all we need to keep to our routine), but this time I’m not sending my girls to school. I’ve learned that every time there is a rocket attack on Ashkelon only about 5% of the kids go to school. Most Israeli parents want their children to feel that they are safe – and who can blame them, right? They don’t learn anything that day, and whatever they do, they repeat when the whole class is back. My girls find it creepy to be in a nearly empty school, and most of the kids that do come leave in the middle of the day. And also of course there is a fear factor – they know that if there is a siren while they are at school that they have nowhere safe to go!
Dozens of rockets and mortar have been shot into southern Israel yesterday and this morning. I really hope that we can put a stop to this once and for all!"

"Ok, that's it. Everyone is now sleeping downstairs besides -, - & I. When (not if..) there will be a siren all we have to do is scoop up - & run.
Today ,during the time that - was on the school bus on the way home there was a siren. The driver didn't have Radio Darom on, the windows were closed and until they made their first stop and were met by hysterical parents - no one knew. That could of ended in a tragedy. I am dealing with it."

There's nothing I can add to this.  It's amazing how people find the energy to continue.  Most of Israel is totally unaffected by the attacks.  It's very much like it used to be when northern Israel was being attacked by Syria before the 1967 Six Days War.  The Syrians had used the Golan Heights as their base to attack, bomb and terrorize parts of northern Israel, especially the Gallilee (Hula Valley, Hazor.)

And northwestern Israel, such as Kiryat Shmoneh, has still been in danger and attacked by Lebanon.

Most of the country ignored that, too.  We must consider an attack on Netivot to be an attack on Tel Aviv and react appropriately.
