The Vatican And Israel, What's Being Negotiated?

I've already blogged my trepidations about Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Danny Ayalon's working visit to the Vatican, and this latest report, thanks to IMRA has only made me even more nervous.  What are they negotiating about?  Unfortunately there's  no chance the Vatican will agree to return precious holy objects they looted from our Holy Temple.  That's the only thing we should be discussing with them.  We don't have anything of theirs, but they stole from us.

"What's Being Negotiated?"

That's not the Vatican's business. Aren't they busy trying to buy off those they molested?

Batya, in all seriousness, the Jewish clerical world has had its fair share of molestation scandals in recent years.

Besides, in a catholic world, all you need to do is confess and - P-O-O-F - one's sins are gone!

Shy, there's no comparison. A priest who marries or has a common law female wife loses his priest job, but if is proven a molester he goes to confession and keeps the job.

We Jews aren't that fokokt.

Batya, in many cases, we were very fokokt. This is not the place to link to the blogs which follow these cases but they are scandalous in the way Jewish leaders and institutions tried to cover them up or suppress justice.

There are too many similar cases in our own backyard.

And this is not the issue here.

Having say what I just did, there is no comparison of the scale of the catholic church's abuse problems to those in the Jewish community.

In addition, there is no comparison to the centralized organizational management which the church has verses the diverse and unrelated Jewish communities and individuals.

do you have any proof the vatican has or "stole" temple kelim? i'd like to see it. i've heard this claim many times but never seen the evidence.

I heard that the underside of the Pope's pink yarmulka says that it was "Honestly stolen from the Bat Mitzvah of Ashley Bareshevsky, August 17 2005, Atlantic City NJ".

Yoni, It's the best guess and they've never fully denied it.

I believe Josephus says that some/most of the Temple's vessels were put on display and then melted down.

Then you also have to keep in mind that Constantine only ruled a few hundred years later and the Vaticanized church only formed thereafter.

Titus & Co. were not christians.

It has been written so many times that they have holy objects. If they had nothing they'd sue, nu?

batya, the burden of proof is on the one making the claim. "they'd sue,nu?" is pretty silly and, if i may be so bold, probably some vestigial remains of your former american mentality. :) anyway, according to my own vestigial american mentality, i'd say if we had any proof they had the goods, we'd be the ones suing.

i've just always been curious about the issue, like a lot of people.

yoni, we need Indiana Jones, nu?
