Giving Our Side A Chance to Speak

The Other Side is providing a forum for those of us, Jews, who are totally at home in the Land of Israel.  They were here in Israel a few months ago, interviewed and filmed us (me and my husband) and a number of other Jews.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that "Cynthia from Beit El" is a long-time, pre-Israel, friend of mine.  For those who think that all "settlers" sing the same tune, they'll be very surprised at the differences between Cynthia and my opinions.  Considering that we're the same generation and here almost exactly the same amount of time, it's a good lesson to remember that we're all actually quite different.

Here are our interviews:

"Revenant" is nice. In french, it means "ghost" (a spirit haunting the places where the person used to live).

"Revenant" is a word nobody uses. Heck! Even Firefox's spell-checker doesn't know what the word is.

Did you ever hear anyone in the US, Canada or Europe say that they live in a revenant? Of course not!

"Towns" and "communities" are perfectly good words.

Shy guy: he never said he lived in a revenant, he said he WAS a revenant, meaning a person coming back, but it really means a ghost coming back without the body...

I guess the correct english word would be returnee

(but this would not have this nice ghostlike association to it...)

There's no need for any substitute of settler. He's a resident/citizen of Shiloh.

(I've only heard the word revenant once in my life:( In Interview With A Vampire and it was not in a good way. The more recent vampires (Louis, Lestat) call the more primitive ones revenants.)

Resident/citizen of the town/community of Shiloh is just fine.

Beautiful video, Batya! Your love of Shiloh shines through. You smile every time you mention it:) You're so serene.

I don't use terms which confuse people. I'm an Israeli citizen who lives in Shiloh. That's my home, very simple. Thanks, Keli, appreciated.

This is true--I watched the video and took a nap a bit later.

I went to Israel in my dream and my family freaked out, wondering how I got there. I kept telling them that I was staying.

What you conveyed in your video penetrated my subconcious enough to dream of Israel.

I watched your friend's video, too. She also seems very serene and has a gentle nature.

Does Israel attract such people or do you become content once you're there? Sounds like my kind of place:)

Keli, Israel attracts all sorts. Cynthia was always focused on what's important. How else could someone marry at 19 and stay happy all these decades?

Very true.

Her Hebrew name suits her perfectly I think.

Great videos ... too little, too late? What's with the PR 'department' over there. I hope this isn't a repeat of the 'calm before the storm' as the forces of darkness plot against you like in the Gush. That said, there needs to be more, like, millions in adverts and campaigns to avert a forced withdrawal. Something has to give. Tupac Shakur, the former rapper, had a song with a refrain saying "its me against the world" (although I don't subscribe to his music) which speaks volumes for those of us in that position of uncertainty. So with Hashem's help so be it.

"PR 'department'?" I wish! These were a private initiative by the jblogger, Elder of Zyon. We all do our best. Complaining is useless.
