Donald Trump, nbcnews.com |
I've written before, and I'm not the only one to say this, that by sabotaging Trump and going contrary to the wishes of potential Republican voters, not only will they be handing the US Presidency to the Democrats, but they are destroying the Republican Party.
One of the principles of American democracy is "winner takes all." In the United States, unlike Israel, there is no real status to the loser, the "Opposition Leader." He/she is "history," has no government role, because even if the loser had been a top senator or congressman, he/she would have resigned to run for the presidency. In Israel the Opposition Leader is the head of the largest party not in the ruling coalition, meaning that he/she is an MK-has a parliamentary seat and all the power, committee appointments and privileges that entails.
By trying to push in a "third party" Republican to run against Trump and the Democrats, they will certainly not only lose the elections, destroy the Republican Party, and cause major cynicism in those who had once believed in the party's principles. And they would actually strengthen Trump as a national leader, proving that his antiestablishment ways are truly legitimate.
And back to the image of shooting themselves in the foot. It would be like hitting a major artery and causing fatal blood loss. I doubt they can recover from such an act. They only way to rehabilitate the party is to fully support Trump.

"It Is TRUTH!"
Mommy, There will be big revelations this coming week. Most people won’t understand what they are hearing or seeing but there will be enough people that will understand. The world is in great danger. The drums of war are heard everywhere. Worldwide we see countries pulling out their most deadly weapons and exhibiting them together with their armies marching in formation to the sounds of war. The rattling of missiles, beating of the drums is happening in almost every country of the world. While most of the people stop and scratch their heads trying to figure out why in the world everyone is talking about war. It’s not clear in any way what the reasons are for countries to go to such an extreme. But the world has bowed its head and just let the Reshoim continue their plans to take over all of the world and march most of humanity directly to their death.
This coming week should reveal more of their plans. The people of America are trying to make Donald Trump their president in order to overcome the shackles that have been put on them by the Reshoim or socalled popular vote of the people of the United States. I doubt very seriously if there will be an election at all.
Hashem is going to bring upon the world such an enormous tragedy, such an enormous test for the righteous and those who want to be righteous, that in all history, since man was created, no test, no spiritual test has ever been so difficult.
But Hashem is preparing us for it. He created us and He knows who will pass and who will fail, Chas Vesholom. However we don’t know what the outcome will be. So, Am Yisroel, hold on tight to your Emunah and Bitachon in Hashem. Hold on tight to your Davening and to our customs, our learning Torah, to everything that makes us Yidden. Hold onto your outward Tzniusdik look of a Yid. Hold on with all your heart, your soul and your might so as not to be blown away by the incredibly strong winds of destruction that will destroy most of the world. There will also be fire and water together with the wind that will destroy two thirds of our planet eart. This is not a joke, it’s not made up. It is Truth! It’s not a movie or a story written in a book. It is the Truth! One day soon we are going to realize that it is Truth. I hope for all Am Yisroel and for all the righteous Goyim that accept the Truth that we survive this most difficult time and live on to achieve eternity.

I don't quite follow...
This is all according to the Democrats' plan.
The Democrats have a problem. Their preferred candidate, Hillary, is less popular than the runner-up, Bernie. According to various polls, of all the Republican candidates the only one she could beat is The Donald. And isn't it interesting that The Donald, a lifelong Democrat until the last presidential cycle 4 years ago, is suddenly the Republican candidate?
So you're saying that the dems voted in the republican primary for Trump?
>> He/she is "history," has no government role, because even if the loser had been a top senator or congressman, he/she would have resigned to run for the presidency.
That's not true at all. Bob Dole did that (stupidly) in 1996, but he didn't have to.
A Senator may have his term end and a possible re-election come up in the same year as he runs for President and may lose his position. That is what happened to Barry Goldwater in 1964. But Senators have a 2/3 chance of term not comeing to an end in the same year they are running for President or vice president.
This is even less the case now for Governors, because most of them are now elected for 4-year terms in even years that are not presidential election years. Bill Clinton and George W. Bush (the younger) would have remained Govenor had they not been elected president, in 1992 and 2000, respectively, and Obama would have remained a Senator in 2008. Dukakis remained Governor of Massachusetts after losing in 1988 and McGovern remained Senator in 1972.
In some states a person can run for re-election as Senator at the same time he is running for President or Vice President. Lyndon Johnson (D-Texas) did that in 1960 amd was re-elected and so did Lloyd Bentsen in 1988. Also Joe Lieberman D-Conn) in the year 2000 and Biden from Delaware in 2008 and Paul Ryan in 2012. They all were re-elected. McCain's term was not up in 2008. Neither was Sarah Palin's but she resigned the next year as Governor probably because she couldn't raise money for lawyers which she needed to pay because of a basically political ethics investigation. John Edwards' term as Senator was up in 2004 but before he ran for president he had already decided not to run for re-election, and I'm not clear if he could have run simultaneously for 2 offices.
Now Goldwater came back to the Senate in 1968 (he had to start all over in terms of seniority) Hubert Humphrey also had interrupted service - he got back in the senate in 1970 after Eugene McCArthy left. In 1964 his term had not been up, but he resigned afterwards and Walter Mondale was appointed..
Presidents who lose a race for re-election, though, as Carter did in 1980, and George Bush the Elder did in 1992, are just out. In Parliamentary systems they are not, but nowadays they sometimes have a tendency to resign as leader of their party.
Of course vice presidents are running at the expiration of their terms (Nixon in 1960, Hubert Humphrey in 1968, George H.W. Bush (the Elder) in 1988, and Al Gore in 2000. Mondale had been defeated with Carter 4 years before he ran in 1984.
People not holding any office may very well be completely out after losing a race for president
Some people devote time to running for president and are no longer in office when they do. That was the case with Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, both of whose terms as Goernor had ended after the 1974 election. Mitt Romney's term as Governor of Massachusetts expired after 2006 before his first run for president. Nixon, of course, was out of office, but well known, in 1968. George Bush the Elder held no position in 1980.
Geraldine Ferraro was out of the U.S. House of Represenatives after losing in 1984.
This is so far only talking about people who won the nomination. While runningg for the nomination, some candidates, who need to run for re-election and can't run smultaneously for president, can play it safe, like Rand Paul did this year.
>> The Donald, a lifelong Democrat until the last presidential cycle 4 years ago, is suddenly the Republican candidate?
No, he wasn''t a liifelong Democrat. He switched parties a number of times, proobably with an eye to running for office. In 1988, he had attempted to become Geoge Bush the elder;s vice president.
Then came the adultery and divorce and he did not consider any run for office possible for about 10 years till he actually started running for president in 1999 and into 2000 (for the nomination of Ross Perot;s 'Reform' Party) - which I didn't know.
BM> I don't quite follow...
Who knows where that (false prophecy?) comes from?
That os adted May 6. I think the week is up.
Thanks Sammy, stand corrected, but remember there isn't a "role" called "opposition leader."
