And if he was dying?

G-d forbid I should belittle Olmert's cancer. Cancer is cancer, and some people with the most serious survive and thrive and others die after first being diagnosed with a minor case. So who knows what Olmert's health prognosis really is, only G-d.

But by announcing that he has cancer, however microscopic it may be, his approval rating rose to a whopping 11%.

So, a very sincere refuah shleimah, complete recovery, from me here in the Holy City of Shiloh.

B"H Who knows? Maybe this was to show what great "integrity" he has. (Yeah, right!) Oh, maybe they knew they couldn't hide it, and decided to beat the journalists to the punch.

His good pal Rudy G was also very up front about his cancer, same basic type, and is now running for US Pres. He finds it easy to be honest, since the prognosis is so good.
Betty Ford did a lot for breast cancer when she was open about her own surgery, and now John and Elizabeth Edwards are open about hers.
I'm sure that Olmert calculated this all in.

Not me.

The above site is highly associated with Rav Shmuel Eliyahu (Chief Rabbi of Tzfat) who pretty much echoes his father, Harav Mordechai Eliyahu's feelings, sometimes saying the things that the father could not say publicly because of his stature.

So,
Don't pray refuah shlema for Ariel Sharon or Olmert. It' much more important to pray that they do tshuvah.

Something that you guys would like. After Sharon was hospitalized and it became known that he had had serious problems beforehand, some right-wing MKs brought ideas to the knesset to demand full health disclosure to the public, not unlike the US prez. Naturally, it was shot down by all. A few months ago, I think someone from Yisrael Beitenu also tried to table similar law, but was also shot down by Kadima. Now, after Olmert made his 'brave' and 'courageous' statement to the public, his office decided to announce that they will be bringing a new law (not mentioning the past efforts of course) that will require PMs to disclose health status.

I wonder if that will apply to the dead. Rabin's health files, xrays, and other 'memorabilia' are still secret because the courts back the doctors when they still claim patient-doctor secrecy between Rabin and his doctors. Can you believe that?

Ironic.
I remember how shocked the public was to discover that Golda Meir had been suffering from Leukemia for years, including her time as prime minister.
It seems like the only thing Olmert is honest about is his health.
Yes, tshuva, but health--refuah shleimah is also being mentally healthy enough to repent.
