Guest Post: Dollars and Yom HaDin

What I am about to say might be completely wrong, but I suspect that on the Great Day of Judgment [Yom HaDin], the Heavenly Court will show that Jews spent hundreds of millions of dollars each year on kosher cruises and eating in very expensive kosher restaurants (with those in Manhattan being the most expensive of all.)

Next, Heavenly Court will ask Jews why yeshivot were constantly in debt, and why kiruv rechokim was ridiculously underfunded in comparison to the super-massive need, and why pro-Israel activist organizations were also underfunded in comparison to their needs.

What I am about to say might be completely wrong, but I suspect that on the Great Day of Judgment, the Heavenly Court will ask Jews why they spent many hundreds of millions of dollars more-than-necessary on engagement parties, vort ceremonies, and super-expensive weddings; millions of dollars that would have been more-wisely-spent on helping Jews in various ways.

What I am about to say might be completely wrong, but I suspect that on the Great Day of Judgment, the Heavenly Court will ask Jews why they spent millions of dollars on deadly cigarettes and strong liquor and unnecessary newspapers; millions of dollars that would have been better-spent on helping poor Jews in many ways.

Are Bibi's Days Numbered?

There are people all over the world trying to push Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu out of office. Now, it's not that I'm a great fan of his --I have just too many complaints-- but like most Israelis, there just isn't an alternative, neither on the Right or Left of the Israeli political spectrum. And if there's one truism that applies for any politician running for a nation-leading spot in this world, it's that when in office his/her supporters will be very upset and disappointed. Very few, whether in the USA or Israel or anyplace else keeps important campaign promises, especially when it comes to Israeli issues.

Barely a year had passed between Netanyahu's two most recent elections, and lots of pundits and politicians, especially the wannabes, have been predicting that his razor-thin majority of just 61 wouldn't/couldn't last even as long as his previous government. Well, so far they're wrong.

The members of Bibi's coalition seem to be sufficiently afraid of elections to keep the coalition going. And many actually prefer Netanyahu as Prime Minister much more than they'd like to see Herzog of Labor aka National Union as PM. Jeremy's Knesset Insider describes the situation very well in his My Weekend Perspective: The Key to Defeating Netanyahu is Phase 2.

One of the reasons that Israeli political party leaders are afraid of elections is that for decades already, certainly since 1977, the polls frequently underpredict the popularity of the Likud. And that is why we've seen Likud led coalitions for most of close to forty years. Also, in recent years Netanyahu has proven himself to be a very capable and wily politician. Again, I don't like his policies. I'm past disappointment, because I have seen too much. I heard him say, during the short time that Ehud Barak was Prime Minister, that he thinks a Prime Minister should be a Centrist, so ideology plays second fiddle to that. And what he calls Center I call Left. That mix does give him a national popularity which can't be denied. Remember that I'm an uncompromising unabashed Right wing extremist compared to most Israelis.

The Israeli Left has nobody who can be considered a national leader. They are trying to promote Moshe Kahlon and maybe Gideon Sa'ar. About Sa'ar, I don't think he's "hungry" enough for the climb to top office, and I don't know if he really wants to risk his marriage for it. Basically his wife, TV news presenter Geula Even, would have to curtail her career if he was to return to active politics.

There's an irony in one of the complaints about Netanyahu, his age. Although he may be approaching Israeli retirement age, he's still younger than the top contenders for the American presidency, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.

Arab Terrorism Caused by Israel's Weakness

When I was a high school English Teacher in a yeshiva high school, and I'd want to give a hint to my students of what the Hebrew for "doubt" is I'd ask them to give a word with the same gematria as Amalek. And they quickly shouted out:

" ספק,  saffek."

Chazal say that our eternal enemies, Amalek, can sniff out our weaknesses and that's when they attack. In another couple of weeks will be Shabbat Zachor, the Shabbat before Purim when we are commanded to remember what Amalek had done to us.

“Zachor Et Asher Asa Lecha Amalek BaDerech Betzetchem MiMitzrayim”“Remember what Amalek did to you on your way out of Egypt! (Dvarim 25)”On the Shabbat that precedes Purim, two Torah scrolls are taken from the ark; one for the regular parsha and one for the Maftir – ‘Remember what Amalek did to you’ (Dvarim 25). Because of this reading, it is called, Shabbat Zachor (Remember). The Haftorah also deals with Amalek.
There is a mitzvah in the Torah to remember Amalek and his descendants and to orally recall their iniquity. We are to tell our children in each generation what the people of Amalek did to us during our departure from Egypt. This mitzvah will be fulfilled completely only when we shall have caused Amalek’s memory to perish, and their name to be erased from the world, together with the slightest remnant of anything that bears their name. As the Torah says: ‘Remember what Amalek did to you on the way, upon your departure from Egypt’… ‘You shall erase the memory of Amalek from beneath the heavens, you shall not forget.’ Upon which the Sages have expounded: ‘Remember,’ orally – ‘You shall not forget,’ in your heart. The great weakness of Modern Zionism has always been the yearning for peace between Jews and Arabs in the Land of Israel. This made us more accommodating and accepting of the terror and cruelty that Arabs have exhibited from the very beginning until this very day. And it has also caused a "guilt complex," because most Jews, dangerously, believe that Arabs have equal if not stronger rights to be here in the Land of Israel.

Modern, Liberal (with a capital "L") philosophy cannot accept the Biblically based concept that the Jewish People are the One  and only One Chosen People of Gd.

For well over a century, ever since the very beginning of Modern Zionism, the return of the Jewish People from all over the World to the Holyland to establish a Jewish State, there have been attempts to placate the Arabs. There have been three very dangerous results:

• Arabs from all over have been attracted to live in the Land of Israel, greatly increasing the once minimal population. And even if they themselves had recently arrived from Syria, Egypt etc. they all claim that their families have lived here forever.
• Arab terrorism against Jews became an accepted, because the Arabs know that they are lightly punished and treated as ordinary criminals, if punished at all.
• By accepting Arab rights to be here and inventing an Arab nationalism which is called Palestine, sic, Jewish Rights to the Land of Israel have been marginalized by Jews and non-Jews alike.

The best way and only way to stop Arab terrorism is to stop being sorry for our victories. This Land is not to be shared with Arabs. It is our Land, the only Jewish Land there is. Anyone who does not accept full Israeli/Jewish sovereignty over the Entire Land of Israel should just leave and look for a land of his/her own. And not everyone is of a land-based people. 

We will only have peace when we fully defeat the enemy and stop trying to be nice!!

Purim: The Story of Esther, Typical Hidden Female

An Illustrated Megillah

Today at the Shabbat Women's class I've been going to pretty much every Shabbat for over thirty-four years, we had a "Pre-Purim" talk. It was actually by one of the younger women who has lived in Shiloh all her life and was a toddler when these classes began. I'm happy to say that there are lots of amazing people who were raised in Shiloh, and some of them have decided that Shiloh is great enough to raise their own kids here.

Well, we had this discussion about women in general and Queen Esther in particular. My reflections on it are mine and probably a distortion of the talk, but that's me.

The name Esther אסתר mean "hidden." And that in many ways is her role. Like many women, she plays second fiddle to the men. Mordechai, her relative, was the public Jew. He sat at King Achashverosh's gate and was well-known. He sent Esther to the "competition" to choose a new queen and told her to keep her Jewish identity a secret. She did, and she was chosen to be the next queen. Mordechai basically planted her as a "sleeper" agent.

But don't think that being a queen was such a great deal. Basically she was just to be kept beautiful for formal occasions. She was to be seen and not heard. She lived with the other women, kept beautiful just in case King Achashverosh needed a woman.

King Achashverosh was under the influence of Haman who hated Mordechai. So when Haman decided to not only kill Mordechai but to include all his Jewish brethren, King Achashverosh gave him full authority. That's when Mordechai's plan for Esther had to be activated. And that's when the puppet became the puppeteer. It was Esther, the hidden sleeper, who gave the orders and did the daring acts that saved the Jewish People.

And then, instead of being a real powerful queen, she went back into the the women's quarters and Mordechai retook his role as leader.

Guest Post: Greek Jews Syrian Jews

Over the past 35 years, I noticed that the highest intermarriage rates [between Jews and non-Jews] are found in communities where Reform Judaism is most dominant, and the lowest intermarriage rates are found in communities where Reform Judaism does not exist.

Around the 1920s [of the Common Era], tens of thousands of Jews came from Greece to New York City, and tens of thousands of Jews came from Syria to New York City. 

In the 1920s, the numbers of Greek Jews and Syrian Jews in New York City were approximately equal.  Their observance of Jewish rituals was also approximately equal. 

Around that time, the Greek Jews of NYC decided to follow Reform Judaism, while the Syrian Jews followed Orthodox Judaism.

By the 1980s, the Greek Jews of NYC [and the USA] were so few in number that there was only ONE Greek Synagogue in NYC, and that ONE Greek Synagogue functioned mostly as a museum.  The very few Greek Jews of NYC were intermarrying with Gentiles at a very high rate, and very few participated in any kind Jewish activities.  One Greek Jew who I personally spoke to had decided to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day instead of Purim.

By the 1990s, the Syrian Jews of NYC had grown exponentially, with many new synagogues that did not exist in previous decades, and more-than-enough new Syrian Jews to fill those new synagogues with active members.  Their rate of intermarriage with non-Jews was LESS THAN ONE PERCENT [<1%].

By year 2015, the Greek Jews of NYC were so few in number that their community had basically ceased to exist.  They had no schools, and only that one synagogue which mostly functioned as a museum.

By year 2015, the Syrian Jews of NYC continued to grow rapidly, with less than 1% intermarriage and many new synagogues that did not exist in the 1990s. The number of schools run by-and-for Syrian Jews also increased dramatically.

The Syrian Jews of NYC also added new mikvahs to their infrastructure, while the Greek Jews of NYC had no mikvahs.

By year 2015 the Syrian Jews of NYC had two of their own monthly magazines, while the Greek Jews had none.

By year 2015 the Syrian Jews of NYC had produced dozens of Rabbis, while the Greek Jews had none.
 

In the early 1980s the Greek Jews still had their own social club, called The Pashas.
In 2017, I could not find The Pashas with Google, despite several attempts to search for keywords like “Pashas” and “Greek Jews”.  The Pashas seem to have vanished.

In dramatic contrast, the Sephardic Community Center (which is misnamed, because it is really the Syrian-Jewish Community Center) has often been filled to capacity or near-capacity since it was built in year 1982, which is impressive, when you consider the large size of the SCC building.

The Sephardic Bikur Cholim (which is misnamed, because it is really the Syrian-Jewish Bikur Cholim) is very active with many programs and its own building. The Greek Jews of NYC do not have their own Bikur Cholim organization.

Between 1980 and 2015, more than a dozen new siddurim and machzorim were published by Syrian Rabbis. Total number of Greek siddurim and machzorim published between 1950 and 2017: zero.

THE VALUABLE LESSON TAUGHT BY THIS TRUE STORY:

Initially, the only significant difference between the Greek Jews of NYC and the Syrian Jews of NYC was that the Greek Jews chose Reform Judaism while the Syrian Jews chose Orthodox Judaism.

Less than a century later, the Greeks Jews [of NYC], who chose Reform Judaism, have vanished; while the Syrian Jews [of NYC], who chose Orthodox Judaism, enjoy a rapidly-growing community and seem to have a bright future.

BOTTOM LINE: Reform Judaism causes entire communities of Jews to become extinct,
while Orthodox Judaism causes Jewish communities to grow rapidly.

PS: This short essay reveals a piece of Jewish History
which is known to only very few individuals.
Therefore, I feel it is my responsibility to publicize it,
before it becomes forgotten.

PS: The Persian Jewish community of NYC, which has never known Reform Judaism, also has an extremely low intermarriage rate.  While I do not have exact statistics for Persian Jews, their intermarriage rate seems to be so low that it cannot possibly threaten their future.

PS: The difference between Greeks Jews and Syrian Jews is also demonstrated by their Hollywood celebrity representatives:
Lea Michele [Sarfati] is an American vocalist and actress, famous for her starring role in GLEE.  Lea Michele’s father is [or was] a Greek Jew who converted to Christianity and married a non-Jewish wife [Lea Michele’s mother] and together they raised their non-Jewish daughter [Lea Michele] to be Catholic.
Paula Abdul, another famous Hollywood vocalist, is a Syrian Jew who lights Shabbat candles and helps Chabad.

We Must Not Be Naive When It Comes to Arabs

I was terribly shocked by this ridiculously naive and misleading headline:

Especially considering the unrest and upheavals in the Arab world, how could he say something like this?

We must always remember that there is no Arab/Muslim country that can be considered a non-enemy. Egypt has never considered itself a friend/ally of Israel, and maybe youngsters don't remember, but Egypt was the instigator of both the 1967 Six Days War and the 1973 Yom Kippur War. We in Israel must never forget that. Today it seems that Egypt is busy with its own problems and does not want to fight us, but that does not mean the situation is forever.

We Must Do More Than Demolish Homes of Arab Terrorists!

This "wave" of Arab terrorism against Jews must be stopped! So far nothing has really been helping. Most Israelis breathe a sigh of relief when we hear that the terrorists were executed on the spot. At least those ones won't have another chance to kill, and it means that our taxes won't pay for their room, board, education, medical care and entertainment in jail. In addition it's a big mistake to jail the Arab terrorists as ordinary criminals offering them fair trials and a podium to speak to the world.

Jailing an Arab terrorist turns him/her into a celebrity among Arab society. And the Israeli and internationally supported PA-Palestinian Authority then pays the family a generous stipend. That is why many Arabs try to kill Jews; the family needs money.

Abbas: Terror wave is a 'legitimate peaceful protest'
PA chairman says the current "intifada" is nothing but a "popular peaceful uprising”, refuses to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.

It's nice to hear that the Israeli Government has announced that it's planning on demolishing the homes of the terrorists who violently axed the guard in the Maale Adumim Mall and tried to kill Roi Harel, the young father in Eli.

This will only be effective if there are periodic inspections to make sure that nobody has built them new homes. Let them be taken to a border crossing and forced to leave the country.  And I'm not talking about to the terrorist Abbas's neighborhood...  Generally, the PA-Palestinian Authority also rebuilds the terrorists' homes, better and better.That's why they stand to gain and haven't stopped attacking Jews.

And why do we keep handing over the bodies of the arab terrorists, when Hamas holds the bodies of our soldiers? We should bury them in hidden graves until all of our soldiers are returned. That's the only language the Arabs understand. To them it's normal to hold the bodies hostage. Being nice will not teach Arab terrorists to be humane. It will only encourage them to terrorize us more!

BDS Impoverishes Arabs

Do you remember the SodaStream saga? That's the case when BDS, which claims to answer to a higher moral authority, insisted that it was immoral/illegal for SodaStream to have a factory in Mishor Adumim. It didn't bother the BDS people that the factory employed lots of Arabs, and Jews, too. And the Arabs would be unemployed if the factory closed.

No surprise but nobody came to the rescue of these Arabs, and the Left, Israeli and international, didn't care that there was harmony between the Jews and Arabs there... Of course, no surprise that SodaStream capitulated to the demands and closed the factory, throwing loyal workers out of their jobs. SodaStream built a factory in the Negev, which was fine for BDS and also fine for the Israeli workers and the new workers, but it was bad news for the Arabs who had been working there.

It's a lot harder for the Arabs to get a work permit to work in the Negev than it was to work in Mishor Adumim. So, whom do you think is getting blamed?

BDS? No, That would be too logical.The Israeli Government, Yes, of course. Any excuse to blame Bibi!

I blame Bibi for being weak, not for making the Arabs lose their jobs. Bibi hasn't effectively taken on the BDS and shown the world what antisemitic phonies they are. And not only is the BDS anti-semitic and anti-Israel, they don't really like the Arabs either....

People who purchase the New York Times are also accomplices, because their purchases support the New York Times financially, so the NYT can continue its relentless anti-Israel bias. 

 

It is my sincere personal belief that people who purchase the New York Times will be PUNISHED for it on Yom HaDin, the Great Day of Judgment.

 

This will include thousands of Jews who claim to be Orthodox, who continue the purchase the New York Times even though they should know better.  I sincerely urge all people who still purchase the New York Times to repent before it is too late.

IDF VS CHRISTIANS?  For the record, JewishIsrael did not come up with those rather antagonistic headlines.  The popular messianic publication "Israel Today" plastered those words over a screenshot of Christian Messianic Israeli YouTuber Hananya Naftali and his recent clip, "What's like being Christian in the IDF "

Naftali's videos enjoy something of a cult following among certain pro-Israel advocacy groups, but let's see if the Jewish activists running the show continue to be Naftali's groupies once it's fully understood that the "Christian-Jewish" boy wonder is sharing jesus with the troops.

Republicans Must Choose Between Trump and Losing

Early on in the Donald Trump campaign to be President of the United States as a Republican, newspapers and news sites were full of articles saying the "joke" would soon fade away and quit or that now his popularity will drop etc. Well, the joke's on the ol' elephant.

This elephant aka the G.O.P. has forgotten something important. A political party is only relevant if it wins, and instead of embracing, ok, with gritted teeth, the most popular of the wannabes, it has been doing everything possible to facilitate his loss. Yes, I'm rather surprised that the party establishment is so autistically incapable of reading the will and opinions of ordinary Americans. This is even worse than in the Israeli elections of a few decades ago when the Labor Party referred to those who attended Likud election rallies and adored Menachem Begin as "riff-raff." Not only did they lose that election, but they alienated potential supporters.

I don't know why the party machine prefer defeat to Trump. Every time they treat him like a pariah they lower their chances to work with him and guarantee a win.

Ever since the primary system began in order to choose party nominees, the ordinary American citizen has gotten more power and the party machines less. For years I've been waiting for a constitutional amendment to banish the antidemocratic Electoral College, which can so easily distort election results, because it overrides the Popular Vote.
