On the Saturday of the great fire in 1911 that
engulfed the building and killed 145 workers,
Reb Zecharia was at home.  It was the Jewish Sabbath. 

He learned two lessons from this: he vowed that
his children would never become factory workers
and he vowed that they would never work on the Sabbath.”

Bibi Left with Buji: No Jewish Building in Judea/Samaria

About those rumors of Prime Minister Binyamin "Bibi" Netanyahu making a deal with Opposition Leader Isaac "Buji" Herzog, apparently there's some truth to it.

Report: Netanyahu and Herzog have agreed on construction freeze
Channel 10 News reveals that Netanyahu and Herzog are drafting an announcement on a freeze on construction in Judea and Samaria.

And as I wrote the other day, it's Bibi who's moving Left more than Buji to the Right. But to be honest, the so-called Rightist Bibi has never been big on building for Jews in Judea/Samaria. He has announced more building freezes than anyone else. It's his favorite technique to show that he's a "centrist" aka Leftist in Rightist costume/disguise. And that's one of the many reasons I don't vote Likud!!

From what I understand, the building freeze affects the larger communities in Judea and Samaria more than small ones like Shiloh, where, as you can see in the following photos, people are expanding their tiny homes to suit their large families.

One of Netanyahu's claim is that he promotes a free economy based on supply and demand, but the truth is that he plans the economy, building in a very political way. Many yishuvim, Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria would be much larger if we had varieties of housing options. There are waiting lists, and the larger towns/cities like Maale Adumim have been suffering terrible price rises because of insufficient housing starts.

Gone are the days when the government built neighborhoods and towns even with special rent/buy deals and mortgage rates for young couples/families and new immigrants. That is not just a Judea/Samaria problem. It's very hard for the low and even middle income couples to save for a small apartment and pay a mortgage. The rents eat up all their income. This has been going on for a couple of decades.

Many young couples choose to live in communities in Judea/Samaria, because of the strong community spirit and excellent education. And in some places it is possible to buy a small inexpensive old home to be fixed up and added to relatively reasonably. That's what these young families have done or are doing.

I don't think that the Bibi-Buji deal is good for the country at all!

Republicans Shooting Themselves in The Foot!

In their foolish and completely antidemocratic way, the Republican machine/establishment is going against the will of their people to try to sabotage Donald Trump. Contrary to all predictions from the experts before and early in the campaign, the outsider Donald Trump had no real problem defeating all of the establishment wannabes to win the Republican Presidential nomination.

I've written before, and I'm not the only one to say this, that by sabotaging Trump and going contrary to the wishes of potential Republican voters, not only will they be handing the US Presidency to the Democrats, but they are destroying the Republican Party.

One of the principles of American democracy is "winner takes all." In the United States, unlike Israel, there is no real status to the loser, the "Opposition Leader." He/she is "history," has no government role, because even if the loser had been a top senator or congressman, he/she would have resigned to run for the presidency. In Israel the Opposition Leader is the head of the largest party not in the ruling coalition, meaning that he/she is an MK-has a parliamentary seat and all the power, committee appointments and privileges that entails.

By trying to push in a "third party" Republican to run against Trump and the Democrats, they will certainly not only lose the elections, destroy the Republican Party,  and cause major cynicism in those who had once believed in the party's principles. And they would actually strengthen Trump as a national leader, proving that his antiestablishment ways are truly legitimate.

And back to the image of shooting themselves in the foot. It would be like hitting a major artery and causing fatal blood loss. I doubt they can recover from such an act. They only way to rehabilitate the party is to fully support Trump.

National Unity Government? UGH!

I think we all know that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has really wanted a national unity government for a long, long time. I can see his point, but I'm happier with the status quo, and that's the same reason why he wants an expanded government coalition.

Bibi wants a national unity government, because his narrow, bare minimum 61 out of 120 MK coalition is too tight to allow him to make any policy changes. That's, davka, why I like it. I hate to think what he and Leftist Herzog have up their sleeves when putting them together.

Unity gov't talks continue apace, as sources close to the prime minister say he's made a very generous offer to opposition leader Herzog.

Lately, Isaac Buji Herzog has been making statements that give the impression he has moved towards the Right, meaning Center. And since Bibi has been doing the same from the Right, their positions are meeting/similar in some cases. I guess they are now following the same game plan...

It means that next elections there will be nothing to choose between; both large parties will be pretty much the same. Granted that the MKs aren't, but they don't run the show.

If Herzog bites, then will Tsippi come along? And will Bennett remain in the coalition?

Rosh Chodesh Sivan, Spring Turns to Summer

On Rosh Chodesh Iyyar, we were overjoyed to see some wild flowers blooming in Shiloh Hakeduma, Tel Shiloh. Since there had been some weed killing, few wild flowers have appeared.

We understand that the administration of Shiloh Hakeduma want to ensure that it will be easy for people to get around the Tel cut down on maintenance expenses, but the weed killers can't distinguish between precious rare wildflowers and annoying weeds.

I'm so glad that I had this opportunity to photograph the flowers, because on Rosh Chodesh Sivan, they may be gone already. Flowers or not, please try to join us.

From Mourning to Joy!

Yes, that's the Israeli way.

After a very long depressing day of mourning our dead, those murdered by Arab terrorists and killed in the wars we fight to defend ourselves, keep our precious country alive and well, we quickly change modes and celebrate our country's continued independence.

I know that there are many people who find it totally incomprehensible that we have this custom here in Israel, to burst into joy after so sincerely mourning our dead, but I davka, consider it such an important and sensible way to celebrate our independence.

Growing up in America, I never really understood what "Memorial Day" was all about. Actually, it wouldn't a "day;" it was a weekend to enjoy. And the story behind Independence Day was more like ancient history, even in my time. And also, the American wars had nothing really to do with the survival of the united States as a country.

In Israel things are very different.

Here in Israel we are all connected somehow. Memorial Day is a school day , and every school has ceremonies to commemorate the dead and to teach the children that our state/country id not come into existance on a silver platter. Nor can it continue to exist unless there are soldiers to defend it, which is why there's a draft. And our enemies don't restrict their attacks to soldiers. We suffer from guerrilla warfare attacks on civilians in neighborhoods, buses and even private homes.

To be honest, we don't exactly go from mourning to joy without a bit of ceremony in between. That is the Eve of Independence Day Prayers, which are very participatory and thrilling.
