More about Winograd...
In response to his being blamed for the incompetant running of the latest Lebanese War, all of a sudden Amir Peretz began saying things which he should have said then.
All along, not that I'm a Peretz fan, I felt that he got stuck with the "hot potato," like in the game.
Peretz was the Minister of Defense at the time of the war. Defense wasn't and isn't his specialty. He's a labor leader. That's it.
Peretz had nothing to do with the army, its policies, training, equipment, politics, nor had he been responsible for building shelters for civilians etc. He hadn't a clue. Even if he had some background and good plans and ideas before getting the position, a very short time before the war, there was no time to correct or change anything.

Blaming Peretz for the military unpreparedness is like blaming a waiter for badly cooked food. The cooks are guilty. In our case, the cooks are in Olmert's government at this very moment: Ehud Barak and Shaul Mofaz. Olmert dished it out and set it on the plate. He put the soup in the bowl which was too small, so it spilled all over, and added lemon to the milk which soured it. The serving made a bad meal worse!
Actually, Barak replaced Peretz as Head of Labor Party and Minister of Defense. If Peretz had been smart, if he had actually understood what happened, he would have used Barak's guilt in his campaign against him. That mistake is Peretz's own fault. It's rather pathetic to think that only now, over a year and a half after the war, he is starting to blame Barak. I guess he finally has a better staff or something.
