Hamas War

Over a Week has passed since the Three Boys were Kidnapped!

Who could have predicted that this was going to be such a long painful vigil? The first two or three days I'd rush to the computer or smartphone to check up on updates to see if they'd been rescued already. Now...  I just can't imagine, I just don't want to imagine how the families of those three wonderful teenagers are holding up.

The Jerusalem Post keeps a live blog feed whatever with updates.

Yeshiva students Gil-Ad Shaer,16, Eyal Yifrah, 19, and Naftali Fraenkel16 were kidnapped by terrorists late Thursday night from a hitchhiking point in Gush Etzion.

Mahmoud Abbas has ceased his feigned concern and is now calling for unity elections with Hamas. We have no "peace partner," so let's finish fighting them all off. There never was any real difference between Fatah and Hamas.

Rescuing/supporting the American citizen among the kidnapped boys isn't really an American priority.

There are still lots of questions about what is happening.

My prayers are with the boys and their families and friends. It could happen to anybody...

Sympathetic News Items of "Arab Suffering" Should Not be on Israeli TV!

  • Gilad Michael ben Bat-Galim, Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devorah and
  • Eyal ben Iris T'shura
Believe you me, it's not just the New York Times and other international media playing up "Palestinian suffering" from the IDF searches for the kidnapped youth.
Three Israeli boys have been kidnapped yet The New York Times is still more concerned with Palestinian “suffering.” It’s only been a few days since the IDF launched a major operation to find the three kidnapped Israeli teens Eyal Yifrach, 19, Naftali Frankel, 16, and Gil-ad Shaar, 16. Judging from Jodi Rudoren’s report for The New York Times, you’d think that Hebron had been “under siege” for months or even years.

The Israeli news is full of the same sort of morale plunging pro-Arab terrorist garbage. While our young IDF soldiers are risking their lives going into Arab terrorists' homes looking for the kidnapped boys and the hundreds or more of convicted Arab terrorists who had been released to give Gilad Schalit his freedom, we keep seeing and hearing the Arab side of things.

What should be our sole priority is the safety of Jews in the Land and State of Israel. Our only concern should be our security. The fact that Israel publicizes its care and kindness for its enemies just makes us look weaker and less reliable in the eyes of the Arabs. And when we look weak, then the Arabs are more attracted to the terrorists. They are pragmatic. They don't want to be perceived as "pro-Israel' by those who have no compunctions about murdering their friends and family over what they rationalize as "honor."

There should be a total blackout on Israeli television of the feelings and so called "suffering" of the Arabs whose homes are being inspected because of  the chance they are hiding Arab terrorists or something of the kidnapped boys. Those Arabs will survive perfectly well at the hands of the IDF unless they are guilty.

Our sympathy should only be to the families and friends of the Jewish victims or this immoral crime.

We must continue praying for:

How to Make Tremping aka Hitchhiking Safer

Tremping aka hitchhiking is here to stay, as far as I'm concerned. Actually I just used that lovely method of semi-private transportation to get home from Jerusalem today. I took two buses from the shuk, Machane Yehuda to the "city line," the border of Jerusalem and the Benjamin Regional Council, where I quickly caught a ride going to Givat Harel, which is across from the Shiloh Junction, then a second ride to the Shvut Rachel-Shiloh Junction and then a ride to my street.

It was daylight, a bright afternoon and I could see the drivers, and they could see me.

One of the big problems is when you really can't see who's driving or waiting, because it's dark. And some places aren't lit all that well, so the drivers can't see who's waiting. And I understand why they don't stop. I wouldn't stop for someone if I couldn't see exactly who it is. And another equally dangerous situation is when you can't see at all who is driving up, nor see the color of the license plate. I once came home via Ariel at night and got a tremp that was going to Eli. I thought it would be fine, like waiting at the Ofra Junction, which I do a lot even at night. There is enough light there so we can see who is pulling up or driving by. Waiting across from Eli I couldn't see anything of the cars coming from Ariel or Tapuach. It wasn't pleasant. And I know that the majority of cars on the road are Arab, so I ignored all the cars from that direction. Finally a car came out of Eli in the direction of Shiloh and stopped for me.

There must be better light at all of the junctions where people wait, and the light mustn't only be on the trempistim, those waiting for rides or buses. They must also project onto the cars, so we can see who is driving and who is with him/her. Just like bright lights make some bugs scamper away, I have no doubt that the terrorists won't like being under a spotlight.

Pulling Together -- A Rebbe's Blessing

From Yitz of Jerusalem: the following is my translation of an article which appeared on the Chadrei Charedim website...

Uri Yifrach meeting with the Sanzer Rebbe in Netanya
Uri and Iris Yifrach, parents of the abducted Israeli yeshiva student Eyal, went last night (Tuesday) to the residence of the Rebbe of Sanz in Netanya, to receive his blessing.

The family members, residents of Elad, were accompanied by Pinchas Gross, a member of the local council, who has been with the family during this difficult time.

The Rebbe honored the parents, asking them to sit next to him at his reception desk, and strengthening them with warm words. Eyal’s mother Iris cried to the Rebbe and asked, "Please bless me that I will get to dance at my son’s wedding."

The Rebbe replied: "Only in the times of Choni HaMa’agel were there tzaddikim (righteous ones) who could ensure that. But the strong faith we have in G-d," he continued, "will certainly help that the family’s hopes will be realized."

"I went to pray for you and for your son," the Rebbe continued, "at my father's grave (the Shefa HaChaim zt"l) and at the Western Wall."

He added: "This is trouble for all of Israel. The fact that there are three hostages makes it into a public matter, with special interest and special pain; but it is clear that [the suffering of] each one [of the captives] causes us pain on its own."

After words of encouragement for 20 minutes, the Rebbe blessed them: "We will meet again just for joy."

The boys' names for prayer and Divine mercy: Yaakov Naftali ben Rachel Devora; Gilad Michael ben Bat-Galim; Eyal ben Iris Teshura.
The Al-mighty G-d does not reject the prayers of the many.

MK Zuabi Should be Arrested for TREASON!

Omer Miron/Flash90
WHAT IS TAKING SO LONG?!?

MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad) should have had been arrested for treason a very, very long time ago. Her anti-Israel outbursts and ideology are totally incompatible with being a free citizen in the State of Israel and even more so serving as a Knesset Member. Anyone, Jew, Arab, diplomat, journalist, academic et al who justifies Arab terrorism for any reason should be arrested and or deported depending on whether they are Israeli or not.
The kidnappers of three yeshiva students last weekend are not terrorists, MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad) said Tuesday.
"They're people who don't see any way to change their reality and they are forced to use these means until Israel will wake up a little, until Israeli citizens and society will wake up and feel the suffering of the other," Zoabi said in an interview on Radio Tel Aviv, adding that the kidnappers live under occupation.

"So an Israeli MK is openly justifying the kidnapping of Israeli boys?" the interviewer, Sharon Gal, asked.

"I'm not surprised at all," she responded. (Jerusalem Post)
Their ideology is no less immoral and dangerous to Israeli security as Nazism.

The State of Israel should show more confidence and determination and stop being so dangerously tolerant of anti-state views.

I'm glad that the Arab terrorists and their supporters are now being punished with force in an attempt to convince them to free the Jewish teenage victims. Honestly, I have no doubt that if we had been consistently more firm in handling all sorts of terror acts and statements, we'd all be a lot safer and the boys would not have been kidnapped.

Your everyday ordinary Arab on the street will do whatever he/she thinks will give him the safest, least harried and dangerous existance. Because they are more afraid of their fellow Arabs, the terrorists, it's rare to hear an Arab whether Israeli citizen or not dare, risk death by saying something anti-terrorist.

Listen to this young Arab, a cousin of MK Zuabi in his amazing trilingual statement.

Now Mohammad Zoabi's life is in danger for saying what he believes that Israel is a good democratic country and the kidnapped teens must be freed. May stay strong and healthy and alive. May he lead his people to a true peace with Jews and Israelis.

I Finally Heard Mention of the Kidnapped Teens on a Foreign News Channel! Guess Which!

OK, I must admit that I don't have too much time to watch television. And of course, being a saleswoman, I don't see TV at work, and I don't have one next to the computer, so it's not like I've been looking for news many hours each day.

I do know Hebrew, and I do understand the news on Israeli TV, so it's not that I needed to find an international news channel for the information. There were a couple of other reasons.

  • One is that I'm curious. I'd like to know if the world knows that Arab terrorists have kidnapped three Jewish Israeli teenagers and how they are playing it.
  • Israel's Channel One, which should be the main source of news has decided not to waste the money it had spent for its World Cup coverage and therefore is showing soccer most of the time.
  • I was sick and disgusted that Israel's Channels 2 and 10 kept on showing how the Arabs are suffering sic to help "balance" their broadcasts.

We have one of these satellite receiver thingies that gives us a "package" of hundreds of stations, mostly in Arabic or other languages I don't understand. We do get a few foreign news channels, such as BBC, CNN and Bloomberg. A number of times the past few days I tried listening to them while in the kitchen or folding laundry or doing other chores near the TV, but never did I hear even a hint of a mention that Israel is searching and praying for three teenage boys who had been kidnapped by Arab terrorists.

A couple of hours ago, again I went through the channels with the remote control, and I noticed a channel I had never ever watched, TV France 24 English. After a few minutes, they suddenly came out with a news report about the kidnapped boys from Israel. I'm pretty sure that the news article, Israel aims to break Hamas as hunt for missing youths intensifies I just found via Professor Google is from that channel. It was the very first time I watched that channel, and I will definitely watch it again when I'm looking for news.

I'd like to know from where you're getting your news. Please let me know in the comments, thanks.

Storm is Brewing for Sure; Heavenly Help Needed

Yesterday, after a long hiatus, I resumed blogging on Arutz Sheva. I used to call my A7 blog "The Eye of the Storm," because I wanted to show the readers that although the news media made life in Shiloh seem like a constant battle, we had the same ordinary calm day to day existance as anyplace else. Under the new site editor who asked that I return, the blogs don't have individual names. We just blog from Zion's Corner, and there are so many Shiloh bloggers there, you'd think he'd give us our own spot...

I wrote that first post just after coming home from the azkara, death memorial for Avi (Avraham Yosef Chaim ben Moshe) Siton, HaYa"D, who was murdered by Arab terrorists with two other teenagers in their schoolyard in Itamar, just north of Shiloh.
Are There New Teenagers With Avi Siton, HaYa"D?
No doubt I wasn't the only one who kept thinking of the three other teenage boys who are missing after being kidnapped by Arab terrorists a few days ago. Avi's father also mentioned them in his moving talk while standing over the grave.

As we stood in the local cemetery, thinking of all of the people, good Jews from all over the world buried there, we couldn't forget that Avi isn't the only teenager. Just in the grave next to him, there is his best friend Shmuel Yerushalmi who was murdered in a different terror attack just a few weeks after him. Nearby are Noam Apter, Yonatan Eldar and Avihu Keinan. Harel Bin Nun is buried in Yitzhar near the site of his murder. Yes, add the "HaYa"D" may G-d avenge their blood to all of their names.

Unfortunately, although I'm not sure that the Israeli media is giving this coverage--though I know it's being ignored by the international media, Arab terrorists have been attacking or attempting to attack throughout this difficult period while the IDF is searching for Gilad Shaar, Eyal Yifrach and Naftali Frankel. Arab terrorists attempted to invade Kochav Yaakov, near Sha'ar Binyamin, and there has been shooting at Jewish cars in Gush Etzion.

Please remember that Gush Etzion's main junction, bus stop and trempiada is the location the boys were at when they were kidnapped by Arab terrorists. Most people in Gush Etzion like to make a point of saying that their area, unlike where I live in the Binyamin Local Council is considered to be "safe" in the political sense, part of the "consensus" that even in a "peace treaty" requiring Israel to give up Land, it will stay Israeli. Unfortunately I think they are delusional. They shouldn't think that Gush Etzion is any safer in any sense or more Israeli than Gush Shiloh.

Not only do the Arabs see us all as "the same," but if you read the Arab propaganda both internal and to the outside world you'd see that they are asking for Jerusalem and Haifa, not Efrat and Eli. Think about it please.

Feeling Rather Schizophrenic at Work

I like pretty much all Israelis, Jewish ones at least, am worried sick about the three Jewish teens who had been kidnapped by Arab terrorists. But while tens or hundreds of thousands of Jews mobbed the area of the Kotel, Western Wall in a massive prayer for G-d to intercede and save the three boys, Gilad Shaar, Eyal Yifrach and Naftali Frankel, I was in Yafiz, Sha'ar Binyamin, working with and selling to Arabs.

On my way to work, yesterday afternoon, I had been wondering if it would be business as usual in our strange oasis of Jewish-Arab coexistence, or would the Arabs not turn up, all claiming illness from the same epidemic or would there be terrible tension between us.

Once I got there, it actually appeared very business as usual. There was the usual polite Arab staff, who understands very well on which side their bread is buttered. I doubt if many would be working for Rami Levy if they could get such a well-paying reliable job in their own town or village. It would certainly endanger them to say that there was any other reason they are working for a Jew. Not being "pc, politically correct" in the Arab sector could easily be fatal.

The Arab customers, were also their usual self, looking for bargains and possibly looking for clothes that would make them look more Jewish. I have dealt with Arabs who come with their kids and try to force the children to speak Hebrew. One young father proudly told me that he lives in Pisgat Zeev.

And how did I feel about it all yesterday? I certainly was more suspicious than usual. It's hard to take the Arabs' smiles and polite words at face value. Politics and security, topics never breached, seemed even further away.

Our patience when Arabs tried to bargain or pretend that the signs indicating what size is on the shelf mean price was pretty thin. We did our job as well as we usually do. It's very much like the song "There's No Business Like Show Business."
There's no business like show businessLike no business I knowYou get word the show has startedThat your favorite uncle died at dawnTop of that your pa and ma have partedYou're broken hearted but you go on

Honestly, I would get another job if I could, but at my age, not many people are willing to hire me.

Dumb Question: If it's Dangerous to Hitchhike Because of Arabs, Then How Could They be Trusted to Make Peace?

I'll word it differently:
If we can't trust that they won't prey on us to kill us, then how can we trust them as "partners in peace," sic?

There's something very off in many people's thinking. On one hand, they are willing to give Arabs land, independence and sovereigntyright here in the heartland of Israel. That they think can be done. They insist that Mahmoud Abbas who has just joined forces with Hamas is reliable and trustworthy. They insist that he is the "peace partner" we've  (not me, but the politicians and media) always dreamed of.

So I just don't understand how we can make peace with him but we can't travel freely by foot, car or tremping where his followers  may pass.

Flash 90

What do you think?

In Defense of Tremping aka Hitchhiking

Tremping isn't the problem. Arab terrorists are!
Yaakov Nafatali ben Rachel Devorah, the son of Rachelli Sprecher Frenkel, director of the Hilkhata Program at Matan
Gilad Michael ben Bat Galim
Ayal ben Iris Teshura
May they be reunited soon with their families.
It really gets on my nerves when I keep hearing that this kidnapping is "because they tremped." That's not the problem. The three teenagers were kidnapped by Arab terrorists. They are victims of Arab terrorism. The problem is the terrorism, not the tremping.

In many parts of Israel and the world, waiting for rides on the road is an accepted mode of traveling. The Arab custom here is not to have formal bus stops. Arabs of all ages, both sexes, hail rides and buses in all different places, even at busy junctions causes delays to others.

The fact that there are Arabs and Jews riding the same roads is proof that Israel is not an "apartheid state." Another fact often ignored is that there are many, many Arabs who legally reside in "Israel proper" sic having an Israeli Identity Card and license plates, but they live in large, lovely homes in Judea, Samaria and the Jordan Valley. So a "yellow licence plate" is not a way to guarantee that the car is being driven by a Jew. Those Arabs are generally more careful, because they don't want to get in trouble with the police and security forces. They are Israelis.

The biggest problem is that there's an active car theft business run by Arabs. Many of the cars they target look very Jewish, with stickers from yishuvim, Jewish communities, and they can easily give the impression that there are Jews driving the car.

That's me waiting for a ride at the Jerusalem "city line."
There used to be these big signs to use, but now we
need to provide ourselves with homemade ones or just
identify our destinations to the drivers.
OK, now I promised to tell you why I need to tremp.

First of all, we don't have cars, not even one. I no longer even have a valid drivers license, and if I did, it wouldn't help, because we can't afford a car. The expenses of owning a car in Israel are very high, and our incomes are very low. My husband was never a driver.

My world, my work, study, income and schedule in general don't suit limiting myself to the buses and public transportation. I certainly do take buses all over, but I also tremp. I do what is practical and convenient.

Sometimes there just isn't public transportation. Sometimes the last bus has already left. Are we supposed to sleep in the street or not go any place? I certainly do a lot less than car owners do. I can't just "pop over" some place for a short time, because I need to take into account travel logistics of public transportation and tremping. I don't take anything for granted. There are many events I don't even attempt to get to. There are times I'm invited to something with an invitation that has a PostScript saying:
"Please don't trouble yourself to come. We understand the difficulties involved. We know you're thinking of us."
Sometimes I make that special effort and with the help of others I attend the event. And sometimes I feel too insulted and don't even. That's life for us.

One of the things I always liked about Israel and enjoyed was that as parents we didn't have to chauffeur our kids around. From a young age they learned to be independent and self-sufficient. Walking also made them fitter. When I was young, growing up in Bell Park Gardens, a garden apartment development my friends and I had that freedom and independence to got wherever we needed by ourselves. My kids also walked to their friends for visits, and when they got older, they took the bus or tremped. Nowadays, even on yishuvim which have gotten much larger, more parents have cars and more parents chauffeur their kid everywhere.

There's another reason that many teenagers tremp here in Israel. They study in schools located in places which have very limited public transportation. And the schools do not have budgets for school buses at all hours to take the kids to classes, homes and tests, such as the Bagrut, Israeli Matriculation Exams. There is only a Ministry of Education bus service for elementary school. When I was a high school English Teacher in Beit El I was not provided with transportation during most of those eleven years. I had to allocate an hour and a half minimum to get from Shiloh to Beit El, even though the direct drive is less than a half an hour door to door. And to get home, it would sometimes take me two hours. I never knew when I'd be arriving home. If I had traveled only by bus, it would have taken me even longer. I had no choice. I had to tremp or I couldn't have worked at all.

So stop condemning us, please. Thousands and thousands of people tremp safely everyday.

There is only one way to stop Arab terrorism, and that is to execute all convicted Arab terrorists! It should be the only sentence the courts hand down. And let the hunger-striking convicted terrorists die, if that's what they want. No forced feeding. Consider it a group suicide. Israel does not need to feed and support more Arab terrorists.

The Praying Havel Havelim

Cross-posted on me-ander

Normally I name the weekly Havel Havelim on the Parshat Shavua, the weekly Torah Portion, but this week I feel that must must make it a prayer for the safe return, rescue of the three Jewish youngsters who have been kidnapped by Arab terrorists:
Gilad Michael Ben Bat GalimYaccov Naftali Ben Rachel DevoraEyal ben Iris Teshura

The three missing students Courtesy of the families

May they be speedily returned, safe and sound to to their families.

And now back to Havel Havelim which is the long-running international Jewish blog carnival. It was started by Soccer Day who no longer blogs. Today it's coordinated on our facebook page. We also use blog carnival, but it seems to be down, and I don't know if it'll be back.

Havel Havelim generally floats from blog to blog. I pick up a lot of the slack. You can send in your links to the host; information can be found on our facebook page. And if you'd like to host one either fill in the file, again on our facebook page, or contact me at shilohmuse at gmail dot com. This week was supposed to be hosted by Tzivia, but "life" or should I say death got in the way. She is sitting shiva for her brother Eli; read the eulogy she wrote.

Following, in no particular order and without identifying the blogs, various posts submitted by others or chosen by me. To make it clear, the posts included may include opinions I don't agree with. Enjoy!
