When I first read it, I knew that I needed to involve children in the review, but then it took me awhile to find the right kids and get their parents' permission.
Brother's Keeper is based on a true story about Shorr's grandfather who had been seriously wounded in the battle for Kibbutz Ramat Rachel and survived. Today Kibbutz Ramat Rachel is a suburb of Jerusalem. Click here for Shorr's story about writing Brother's Keeper.
In many ways, Brother's Keeper reads like a classic short story, which makes it a good book to be used in the classroom for teaching literature in English speaking countries, or English as a foreign language where needed. I'm sure that my yeshiva high school students, during my teaching days, would have enjoyed the story and learned additional English vocabulary at the same time. No doubt many would have shared their own family stories.Definitely, during these difficult times, we all need to read such positive stories. The added bonus is that it's a true story.
